Description

The Public Works Engineering Division is looking for a qualified part-time (hourly) Construction Inspector to review construction projects for specification compliance. Construction inspection experience is required. This position is part-time (hourly), 29 hours a week, with no benefits.

Compensation is negotiable based on experience.

Essential Duties

  • Assists Construction Coordinators in the inspection of water, sewer, sidewalk, bridge, culvert, and related construction projects;
  • Inspects street cuts, backfill operations, sidewalks, drainage elevations, and other routine construction projects for compliance with plans, specifications, standards, work quality, and safety;
  • Observes and records contractor activity on construction sites;
  • Prepares preliminary field photos and notices to property owners;
  • Checks and verifies data for as-built drawings and submittals;
  • Performs concrete, sewer, manhole, and waterline testing associated with projects;
  • Collects and submits potable water bacteria samples from City distribution systems;
  • Monitors paving repair and overlays on roadway projects;
  • Prepares and issues technical records for Construction Coordinators and Manager;
  • Assists with updates to culvert, bridge condition, and non-reportable structure reports;
  • Assists Survey Crew in project stakeout and development;
  • Provides erosion and sediment control inspections and data entry as necessary;
  • Records on-site material quantities, as used for project payments and reimbursements;
  • Measures field quantities for preparation of construction estimates;
  • Communicates with citizens, contractors, City staff, and regulatory agencies;
  • Provides backup coverage for Construction Coordinators;
  • Assists in the issuance and inspection of excavation and driveway permits.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES

Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to citizens may be assigned. When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform services as needed to meet the needs of the City and its residents.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma and considerable experience in sub-professional engineering or construction inspection work.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid drivers license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the ability to obtain a valid VA driver's license within 30 days of employment. An acceptable driving record according to City criteria is also required.

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, physical examination, and criminal background check.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally in both written and verbal formats.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and totals such as volume, area, circumference, measurements, proportions, and pressures.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, verbal, and/or diagram form. Ability to process and resolve common challenges related to construction and building practices.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

Effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Capable of working with and for both individuals and groups of varying backgrounds, beliefs, authority, and education levels.
