This role supports the delivery of major horizontal and civil construction projects, including water and wastewater work, and is ideal for candidates with a construction background who are comfortable working independently without a local office and spending most of their day on the road.

  • Inspect construction projects, or specific portions of projects, to verify that all work complies with approved plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Observe construction activities in the field and document conditions, workmanship, and materials used on site.
  • Identify unforeseen field conditions and promptly communicate these issues to senior supervising construction staff for guidance and resolution.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed field notes and daily inspection reports, including work performed, site conditions, and any deviations from plans.
  • Track project schedule progress in the field and report observations related to milestones, delays, and overall status.
  • Perform basic estimating tasks as needed to support project delivery and cost tracking.
  • Collect and document field information that will assist design teams in refining and improving project designs.
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with design teams, construction contractors, and subcontractors to support effective project execution.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and technical skills to take responsibility for inspecting assigned portions of projects under the supervision of senior construction staff.
  • Provide guidance and informal supervision to less experienced inspectors, sharing best practices and supporting their development.
  • Travel daily to multiple sites across the local DC, Maryland, and Virginia market, working primarily from a vehicle while moving between locations.
  • Report to the program office as required for team meetings, coordination, and project updates.

Essential Skills

  • 1 to 3 years of construction inspection experience.
  • background in construction, with experience in horizontal or civil construction projects.
  • Experience in wet utility or wastewater construction or inspection is highly beneficial.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and related documents.
  • Capability to perform basic estimating tasks in support of project needs.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in maintaining field notes and daily reports.
  • Effective communication skills to clearly report findings and coordinate with senior construction staff, design teams, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Proven ability to work independently in the field without daily in-office supervision.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively within the local DC, Maryland, and Virginia market.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work fully out of a vehicle while traveling between sites.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a construction inspector on municipal water, wastewater, or wet utility projects.
  • Familiarity with civil and horizontal construction practices and field procedures.
  • Ability to build strong professional relationships with multidisciplinary teams in design and construction.
  • Demonstrated capability to mentor or provide guidance to less experienced inspectors.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with multiple active job sites.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage documentation, scheduling, and reporting for several projects.

Work Environment

The Construction Inspector works almost entirely in the field, traveling daily across the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia area to various construction sites and residential locations. The role involves working primarily from a vehicle while driving between sites, with no requirement to report to a traditional corporate office. The inspector will be part of a larger team of approximately 30 inspectors and will collaborate closely with a program management team overseeing a multi-year municipal water and wastewater infrastructure program. The inspector will typically report to a central program office, such as the Blue Plains facility, one to two times per week for coordination, meetings, and updates, while spending the rest of the time on site or on the road. The work environment is field-based and may involve exposure to active construction sites, outdoor conditions, and varying weather. Typical attire is standard field-appropriate clothing suitable for construction environments, along with any required safety gear as dictated by site protocols. This position offers the opportunity to work on a long-term, high-profile infrastructure program within a well-established construction and engineering environment.
