You will verify that soils, concrete, asphalt, reinforcing steel, and other materials meet project specifications, while documenting all findings using a tablet and standardized reporting procedures. The position offers exposure to diverse projects, opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications, and clear pathways for professional growth in construction quality assurance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections on active construction sites to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Conduct field and laboratory testing of construction materials, including soils, concrete, asphalt, and reinforcing steel.
  • Use a nuclear gauge to perform density and moisture testing of soils and other materials in accordance with established procedures.
  • Carry and transport buckets and other materials needed to obtain and prepare samples for testing.
  • Operate a tablet or similar device to document test results, site conditions, and inspection findings in a clear and timely manner.
  • Read and interpret maps, drawings, and basic construction documents to locate test areas and understand project requirements.
  • Communicate clearly with site personnel, supervisors, and project stakeholders regarding test results, issues, and progress.
  • Work independently in the field, managing daily schedules, travel to multiple sites, and completion of assigned testing and inspection tasks.
  • Travel to various construction sites each day, including private new construction and land development projects for commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings.
  • Pick up and return nuclear gauge equipment at designated locations when needed, ensuring safe handling and proper usage.
  • Follow all safety procedures while working on construction sites and when using specialized testing equipment.
  • Support the construction of specific projects, such as healthcare and institutional facilities, by providing accurate and timely construction materials testing.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to perform construction materials testing, including soils, concrete, asphalt, and reinforcing steel.
  • Capability to use a nuclear gauge for field density and moisture testing.
  • Good verbal communication skills to interact effectively with field personnel and project teams.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new technical skills and certifications.
  • Comfort working outside in varying weather conditions on active construction sites.
  • Basic map reading and math skills, with the ability to apply them in field testing and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to carry buckets, equipment, and materials needed for field testing.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • ACI certification or experience with ACI-certified concrete testing.
  • NICET certification or progress toward NICET credentials in construction materials testing.
  • Prior experience in concrete inspection and materials testing.
  • Familiarity with inspection processes for concrete, asphalt, soil, and reinforcing steel.
  • Interest in obtaining additional industry-recognized certifications that enhance career growth and earning potential.

Work Environment

This position is primarily field-based and involves working at various construction sites, including private new construction and land development projects for commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. You will support projects such as a medical eye clinic and similar institutional facilities, performing materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soil, steel, and other construction components. The standard schedule is a 40-hour workweek with typical hours from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and some night shifts as needed. As weather warms, there are frequent opportunities for overtime. The role is highly independent, with daily travel to multiple sites and occasional trips to pick up nuclear gauge equipment before a shift if you do not have an assigned unit.
