This is your chance to join our team - help us to design the infrastructure and buildings that improve the world!We have an immediate opening in the Northern Virginia area for a qualified Transportation Construction Manager, assigned to manage inspection staff and perform a Construction Manager role on DDOT, VDOT, as well as Northern Virginia locality contracts. The Construction Manager will be responsible for managing staff and managing small to large DDOT, VDOT and locality projects, including design-bid-build and Design-Build projects. Must have significant experience in roadway/bridge construction. Experience on local government projects preferred. Capable of leading a construction staff, be proficient at reading and interpreting plans, specifications and shop drawings as well as overseeing construction document controls and enforcing contract compliance. Full VDOT materials certification preferred.Responsibilities:Construction managementManaging and leading a construction staff across a region, interpreting plans and specifications, understanding and implementing requirements from the Minimum Guidelines for QA/QC on Design Build and PPTA Projects documentEnsuring compliance with VDOT's LAP Manual, VDOT Specifications, Locality Project Requirements, and DDOT specificationsResolving field conflicts and disputesCoordinating and running meetingsEnsuring staff is trainedOverseeing documentationPreparing written correspondence to and on behalf of the OwnerPreparing Independent Cost Estimates to justify Contractor change orders.Performing field inspection as requiredReviewing Contractor schedules including initial CPM and monthly updatesCommunicating effectively with the Engineer, Owner and Owner's operational and field staff on a regular basis keeping them apprised of field conditions and maintaining active communications and excellent rapport with the Owner and the entire project team throughout the construction processCoordination with various stakeholders and the traveling publicOversee project safetyRequirements:Minimum of ten (10) years of specific field construction and management experience in the specified areas of transportation engineering and construction including bridge, roadway, and/or tunnels.High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate - Bachelor's Degree or other advanced certificate desirableMust have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle for travel to and from assigned construction sitesMust have good communication skillsMust be able to read/interpret plans and specificationsWriting and drawing skills are necessary to complete and review inspection reports and sketch booksExperience utilizing e-Construction software such as Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud (Plangrid), FieldWire, BlueBeam, CityWorks or Sharepoint)Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, and PDF editing) are required for reviewing and completing electronic inspection reportsCertified Construction Manager (CCM) certification through the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) preferredMust be willing to work nights and overtime, when required by the project assignmentManagement Skills:Applicants must have prior supervisory experience directly managing and mentoring staffApplicants must have demonstrated inspection and management experience with roadway and bridge construction, particularly on VDOT projects, utility construction, and related pavement rehabilitation projects requiring monitoring a contractor's work for conformance to the design plans, specification and general permit requirementsExperience in coordinating an inspection staff and assigning inspection dutiesApplicants must have demonstrated experience resolving field conflicts, coordinating with Contractors and Owners/Engineers, and overseeing a variety of project types and sizesPrevious inspection experience preferredAdditional Training or Certifications:VDOT materials certifications including Asphalt, Concrete, Soils & Aggregate and Pavement MarkingACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certificationDEQ Erosion & Sediment and Storm Water Management certifications required or obtained within 6 months of hireIntermediate Work Zone Safety/ATSSA TCS Certification requiredPhysical Requirements (Essential Functions):This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include:Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfacesMoving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or polesPerforming physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbingRemaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting—for extended periods of timeRepetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingersLifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to 50 yards.Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 75 miles round trip.Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.The work environment may include exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, and other outdoor elements.
