Job Title: Construction Materials Technician

Job Description

The Construction Materials Technician performs field testing and inspection of construction materials, accurately documents and reports results, and supports project teams to ensure materials meet applicable standards and project specifications. This role combines hands-on field work on active construction sites with detailed data entry and clear communication with project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT standards.
  • Review project plans and specifications to understand testing requirements and inspection criteria.
  • Document field observations and test results clearly and accurately in daily reports.
  • Enter data daily into Metafield and similar data management systems.
  • Communicate test results and observations promptly and professionally to project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and verify the proper operation of testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges and other field instruments.
  • Conduct soil sampling, soil testing, and soil compaction testing, including nuclear density testing, as required by project specifications.
  • Perform concrete inspection and concrete testing, including sampling and field measurements, to verify compliance with applicable standards.
  • Support materials testing activities for asphalt, aggregate, and masonry, ensuring tests follow established procedures.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate written reports summarizing testing procedures, results, and any nonconforming conditions.
  • Work safely and effectively on active construction sites while adhering to site safety requirements.
  • Travel to various project sites, including occasional overnight stays for short assignments.

Essential Skills

  • ACI Certification is required.
  • A minimum of 2+ years of construction materials testing experience is preferred.
  • Experience performing construction materials testing for soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry.
  • Proficiency with field testing methods following ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT standards.
  • Experience with concrete inspection and concrete testing in the field.
  • Hands-on experience with soil sampling, soil testing, and soil compaction testing.
  • Familiarity with nuclear density testing and safe operation of nuclear density gauges.
  • Ability to review plans and specifications and apply them to field testing activities.
  • Strong report writing skills with the ability to document field observations and test results clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to enter and manage data in Metafield and similar data management systems.
  • NCDOT certifications are strongly preferred.
  • ICC certifications are strongly preferred.
  • Ability to lift 40-50 pounds and work safely on active construction sites.
  • Willingness to travel overnight for short assignments as project needs require.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous field experience on construction sites performing materials testing and inspection.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in the field while contributing to a collaborative team.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to following established testing procedures and safety protocols.
  • Comfort using technology and software tools for data entry, documentation, and reporting.
  • Interest in continuing to build certifications such as additional NCDOT and ICC credentials.

Work Environment

The work environment is collaborative, team-centric, and primarily field-based, with regular work on active construction sites. You will use testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges and other field instruments, as well as software platforms like Metafield for daily data entry and reporting. The culture emphasizes a laid-back yet professional atmosphere, supportive leadership, and strong teamwork. A take-home truck is provided from day one for work-related travel to project sites. The role involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions, navigating active construction areas, lifting 40-50 pounds, and following site safety and personal protective equipment requirements.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $40.00/hr.
