Job Title: Fire Protection Specialist / Life Safety & Fire Protection Code Consultant

Job Description

This role focuses on performing on-site life safety and fire protection code compliance assessments in healthcare facilities. You travel to hospitals and other healthcare environments to evaluate existing buildings against applicable life safety and fire protection codes, identify and document deficiencies, and produce accurate, well-organized reports and drawings that support compliance and corrective actions. The position offers a mix of field work and office-based documentation, with opportunities to grow into new construction projects and design review work in a stable, specialized industry.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to hospital and healthcare facilities to conduct on-site life safety and fire protection code compliance reviews of existing buildings.
  • Review architectural drawings, building design documents, construction drawings, and life safety plans to understand existing building features and code-required elements.
  • Inspect building conditions in the field and identify features that do not comply with applicable life safety and fire protection codes.
  • Perform building inspection activities related to life safety and fire protection systems, including fire protection inspection and life safety system inspection.
  • Photograph observed code deficiencies and clearly document each violation with written descriptions tied to the supporting images.
  • Compile findings into organized documentation and reports that communicate code issues clearly, professionally, and in a manner that supports corrective action.
  • Color-code and label life safety and fire protection drawings to accurately reflect required code elements and observed conditions.
  • Work directly with contractors and project stakeholders on-site, communicating findings, answering questions, and supporting resolution of life safety and fire protection issues.
  • Collaborate with team members, typically working in pairs on projects, to ensure accuracy of inspections and that no critical details are missed on large buildings.
  • Support a fast-paced production environment by managing travel, inspections, documentation, and follow-up tasks efficiently.
  • Maintain the ability to access and inspect building features in a variety of conditions, including above-ceiling areas, service spaces, and other challenging locations.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in a construction-related field such as Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or Construction Engineering Technology, with a solid understanding of how a building is designed and constructed.
  • Foundational knowledge of construction design, construction planning, and general construction practices.
  • Interest in and aptitude for fire protection design, life safety, and life safety and fire protection systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work with construction drawings, architectural plans, building design documents, and life safety plans.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to interact directly with contractors and clients while on site and to explain findings clearly.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly, typically one week in the field followed by one week in the office, with occasional longer trips depending on project size and location.
  • Physical ability to move effectively throughout healthcare facilities, including prolonged walking and standing during inspections.
  • Capability to climb ladders, access tight or confined spaces, and inspect above-ceiling and service areas safely.
  • Attention to detail and strong documentation skills, including clear written descriptions and organized reporting tied to photographic evidence.
  • Comfort working in both field and office environments and managing responsibilities across both settings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Openness to learning specialized life safety and fire protection code requirements, with the flexibility to adopt new methods and best practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in pairs and collaborate closely with experienced team members to maintain high accuracy on complex projects.
  • Interest in expanding from existing building assessments into new-build portfolios and design review work over time.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple projects, travel schedules, and documentation deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with healthcare facility staff, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle capable of transporting a 6-foot ladder for site inspections.

Work Environment

This position offers a combination of field and office work. Field work primarily involves travel to healthcare facilities within Indiana and Ohio, with occasional trips to other states for larger or more distant projects. Travel is generally structured so you spend one week on the road followed by one week in the office, with occasional trips of up to two weeks when required. Travel-related costs and mileage are reimbursed at the prevailing government rate, and your vehicle should be able to accommodate a 6-foot ladder used during inspections. In the field, you spend significant time walking and standing within hospital and healthcare environments, accessing above-ceiling spaces, service areas, and other building features, sometimes via ladders or within tight spaces. Weekend work is uncommon and typically limited to situations where Sunday travel is absolutely necessary. Office work takes place in a quiet, relaxed business park setting on the west side of Indianapolis, with a strong focus on fast-paced production, accuracy, and high-quality deliverables. You generally work in pairs on projects to ensure thorough inspections and reliable documentation, and you have access to experienced colleagues who provide guidance and support as you develop expertise in life safety and fire protection. The role is part of a stable niche industry with consistent project funding, and health insurance premiums are fully covered, contributing to an attractive and supportive work environment.
