Job Title: Project Manager

Status: Full-time/Exempt

Reports to: Utility Construction Services Manager

Work Schedule: M-F (flexible hours)

Compensation: $100,000-130,000

This pay range encompasses multiple levels of the role. Career level and compensation depends on applicants credentials.

Overview:

Lead utility construction projects from pre-construction through closeout

Summary of Responsibilities and Roles:

  • Intimately involved with the bid process, often contributing information and recommendations on the bid itself
  • Reviews specifications and plans to determine the scope of work on projects
  • Assesses needs and gathers information from multiple stakeholders at the onset of a new project; presents data and information
  • Meticulously attends to a myriad of details
  • Proactively manages utility construction projects from winning the bid to completing the work in conjunction with leadership team and Foremen
    • Establishes project objectives, performance and quality standards and lays out the project plan in accordance with contract specifications
    • Assigns work
    • Initiates and maintains contact with customers and other people to facilitate project activities
    • Monitors and controls projects; provides direction to onsite foremen to drive schedule and adhere to established budget and profitability goals
    • Represents the company in project meetings and attends strategy sessions
    • Works with contract administrators
  • Identifies, applies for, obtains and maintains all applicable permits
  • May requisition supplies and materials; keeps sufficient inventory on hand to achieve project objectives
  • Invites subcontractors to bid on work that cannot be self-performed
    • Vets and selects subcontractors
    • Reviews and approves submittals from subcontractors
  • Develops detailed staffing schedules to ensure that all work will be done on time, inspected and delivered to the customer as final when anticipated
  • Anticipates problems before they occur and collaborates with crews, customer and leaders to resolve them
  • Schedules and runs jobsite meetings
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with crews, foremen, leaders, customers and the general public; keeps team members accurately informed
    • Interprets and explains plans and contract terms to staff, crews and customers
    • Effectively manages client expectations; communicates delays promptly
    • When appropriate, says "no" and sets appropriate boundaries to ensure that we operate within the scope of work as agreed
    • If work outside the agreed upon scope is desired, communicates the need for additional documentation and any associated costs with the changes
    • Provides reports on work progress, costs and scheduling; reports overruns as soon as possible
  • Visits all job sites to ensure that work is performed to standards, meets quality and safety requirements, and that everyone works in a safe manner
  • Comply with, enforce, and support Utilitra safety philosophy, safety training, safety manual and OSHA
    • Ensure all assigned personnel use/wear all appropriate personal protective equipment and tools
    • Foster an environment where safety is expected; correct unsafe behavior immediately and consistently
    • Diligently monitor safety in all situations; proactively work to prevent accidents and injuries at all times
    • Stop work that is being performed in an unsafe manner
    • Take corrective/disciplinary action for repetitive safety violations
    • Reinforce safety rules and the importance of everyone going home safely in meetings, toolbox talks, JSAs, and other opportunities
  • Works closely with the Project Accountant to ensure project billing aligns with progress on the project, customer expectations and changes that occur at the last minute
  • Continuously reviews costs to ensure that projects remain profitable and brings any concerns to the attention of the project team
  • Documents decisions and agreements, project WIP, design changes, customer specifications, accomplishment of goals
  • Consults with appropriate leaders on all issues that could potentially result in legal action
  • Effectively manages the timely Close Out of projects
  • Prepares "punch lists" of items to complete near the end of projects; verifies those items are completed
  • Conducts gap analysis when projects close comparing actual costs to anticipated costs, profits, and timelines; makes recommendations for future bids; communicates lessons learned to all appropriate parties to prevent mistakes and repetitive problems; seeks out ways to improve scheduling, quality, efficiency, communication and procedures
  • Actively serves as an ambassador of Utilitra in the community
  • Uphold the culture of Utilitra on company premises or at company sponsored events.
  • Other duties as assigned or prudent

Required Education, Experience or Background:

  • Experience in leading utility construction projects:
    • Gas transmission and distribution system installation
    • Water distribution system installation
    • Directional boring
    • Trenching and excavating for electrical, water, gas and sewer system installation
    • Grading for utility installation
    • SWPPP installation and maintenance
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management preferred
    • Experience in lieu of a degree will be considered, but is at the discretion of leadership
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills required
    • Negotiation skills
    • Critical thinking skills
    • Presentation experience
  • 3+ years' experience leading construction trades
  • Ability to adhere to a schedule and reliably show up for all scheduled shifts on time
  • Strong skills with organization, communication and attention to detail
  • Computer proficiency and ability to learn new scheduling, project management and accounting software
    • Microsoft Office suite
    • Microsoft Project, Primavera or other industry recognized scheduling software
    • Experience with B2W and Viewpoint/Vista preferred
  • Must maintain or complete OSHA 30 hour course within one year of being hired
  • This role may require periodic travel to jobsites, requiring overnight stays when necessary

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed both in an office and on job sites, inside and outside; exposed to extreme heat and cold, as well as multiple weather conditions
  • Must be able to drive, have drivers' license and clean driving record
  • Sit, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, crawl, climb or balance may be required to perform inspections on job sites

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel is required up to 25% of the time to active job sites, client meetings, and company offices.
  • Overnight travel may be required depending on project location and phase.
