Superintendent - Construction
Location: Project Site (Initially Chicago, IL)
Contract to hire/ Direct Hire
Position Summary
The Superintendent directs day-to-day field operations for assigned construction projects, ensuring work is executed safely, on schedule, and to the quality standards set at preconstruction and contract. This role owns the field schedule, subcontractor coordination on site, and site safety, working in close partnership with the Project Manager on overall project performance.
Key Responsibilities
Field Schedule & Sequencing
- Direct daily and weekly field activities in accordance with the master project schedule.
- Coordinate subcontractor sequencing on site and resolve field-level conflicts between trades.
- Maintain the short-interval (look-ahead) schedule and communicate schedule risks to the Project Manager.
- Partner with the Preconstruction Coordinator during handoff at groundbreaking to ensure schedule continuity.
Quality & Safety
- Enforce site safety plans, OSHA requirements, and company safety policy for all trades on site.
- Conduct regular safety walks and toolbox talks, and document and resolve safety observations.
- Inspect completed work for conformance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Coordinate and track required inspections with the Preconstruction Coordinator and local jurisdictions.
Subcontractor & Site Coordination
- Manage subcontractor performance on site, including manpower, productivity, and schedule adherence.
- Coordinate material deliveries, laydown, and site logistics.
- Lead weekly subcontractor coordination meetings and document field progress.
- Identify and escalate field-driven change conditions to the Project Manager for pricing and approval.
Documentation
- Maintain daily field reports, photo documentation, and site logs.
- Track punch list items through completion and support project closeout.
Requirements & Qualifications
- 5+ years of field supervision experience in commercial, civil/structural, or general construction.
- Strong working knowledge of construction means and methods, sequencing, and safety requirements (OSHA 30 preferred).
- Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors and trades on an active job site.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
- Proficiency with field reporting and scheduling tools (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6, or similar) preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to direct field personnel and coordinate with the Project Manager and Preconstruction team.
- General construction knowledge across trades, with the flexibility to support projects across civil/structural and general construction scopes as needed.
Work Environment & Expectations
- This is an on-site field position; the Superintendent is expected to be present at the active project site for the duration of construction.
- Travel between active projects may be required based on staffing needs and project phase.
- Superintendents are expected to maintain a working knowledge of general construction practices and to coordinate closely with the Project Manager and the Preconstruction team, particularly during schedule handoff at groundbreaking and permitting/inspection milestones. Candidates must be versatile, comfortable with shifting priorities, and able to adapt as the department's structure, tools, and processes continue to evolve.
