Job Description

Centralia College is seeking a creative and talented instructor focused on student success who has a strong knowledge background to fulfill the full-time Construction Trades Apprenticeship Preparation (CTAP) Instructor in the Corrections Education program located at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, Washington. The start date is at the beginning of the Fall quarter in September 2026. Centralia College and its employees working in a correctional education program are expected to follow all Department of Corrections (DOC) Policies, IT and other Security requirements, follow DOC Operational Memorandums, and comply with the Superintendents directions.

CTAP is a 10-week introductory course to prepare students to enter an apprenticeship. This program introduces students to the construction trades, with an emphasis on carpentry skills and agility. Students will also gain knowledge of a variety of trades including but not limited to, Laborers, Iron Workers, and Cement Masons.

CTAP Program Purpose

The CTAP program is designed to:

• Prepare incarcerated individuals for construction careers
• Connect graduates with state-registered apprenticeship opportunities
• Teach industry-recognized safety and employability skills
• Improve successful reentry and employment outcomes after release

Duties and Responsibilities

• Introduction to a variety of different building trades. Orient students to the objectives of the program, learning outcomes and assessment methods
• Basic Tools, Basic Construction, Basic Blueprints (Safe use of tools for various trades, toolbelt preparation, draw basic blueprints, complete physical agility courses for various trades)
• Introduction to Worksite Behavior, Readiness and Safety (Jobsite setting, material handling, physical stamina required for construction, OSHA 10, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion)
• Math for the Trades Fundamentals (Including but not limited to: Fractions, percentages, measuring techniques, concepts of lineal ft, square ft and volume)
• Maintain tool and material inventory in accordance with DOC policy and procedures
• Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep up to date of developments in the field and integrate relevant information into training programs
• Observe and evaluate students work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement

CTAP Faculty Skills:

• Ability to interact with those in custody and/or the public according to expected guidelines; treat people with dignity and respect
• Ability to mentor students and use a variety of teaching methods to best serve the students¿ needs, interests, and ability to learn
• Ability to recognize the value of cultural, ethnic, gender and other individual differences in people
• Ability to build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation and mutual respect
• Ability to work with workers/students in a variety of settings and understand goals and objectives of the community college program
• Maintain accurate records such as budgets, and student grades and attendance

Qualifications

Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.

• Journey-level experience in a construction trade or related industry
• Experience teaching, training, mentoring, or supervising adults
• Knowledge of registered apprenticeship programs and workforce pathways
• Ability to teach construction safety, tool use, and industry best practices
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively in a correctional education environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Four years of recent journey level work experience in building trades OR 1-year certificate or degree and two years journey level work experience in building trades
• Associate degree in carpentry or related field
• Teaching experience at a community or technical college
• Experience working in corrections education
• Experience teaching adult education, high school, or industry
• OSHA 10/30 Instructor credentials.
• First Aid/CPR Instructor certification.
• Experience with apprenticeship readiness or pre-apprenticeship programs.
• Experience working with diverse, underserved, or justice-involved populations.
• Supervisory or lead experience in construction

Conditions of Employment

This position is fully in-person and is based at WCC in Shelton. Remote work is not available for this role.

This is a full-time, tenure track faculty appointment with employment expected to begin Fall Quarter 2026, subject to state legislative funding. The State of Washington provides a comprehensive benefits package for all state employees.

COMPENSATION:

Initial placement on the established faculty salary schedule is dependent upon education and teaching experience. The initial salary range for a 177-day contract is $75,276 - $95,605. Established faculty have the ability to earn a maximum of $112,880.
