Position Summary

Lead, oversee and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of facilities/structures and parks; perform the most difficult carpentry and cement-finishing tasks and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without areasonable accommodation.

  • Lead, plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of facilities, parks and equipment.
  • Plan, direct, and participate in all construction activities; oversee construction of a wide variety of facilities and structures including buildings, parks, sidewalks and drive pads.
  • Train assigned employees in their areas of work including rough-carpentry, finish-carpentry, cement-finishing and welding methods, procedures and techniques.
  • Supervise the use, care and operation of construction equipment including dump truck and small equipment.
  • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Construct buildings, structures and parks utilizing a variety of building materials including block, concrete and metal.
  • Oversee cement-finishing tasks; form, level and finish sidewalks, drive pads, fence posts, gates, gutters, spillways, headwalls, curbs, picnic tables, steps, walks, signs and poles.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and sketches to ensure that construction conforms to project specifications.
  • Perform and oversee other construction tasks including fence installation, painting, plastering, welding and plumbing.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours vocational training in carpentry, plumbing, or welding; and

Three (3) years of construction experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Drivers License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operators Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:

Field and construction site environment; travel from site to site; work around traffic and construction equipment; exposure to fumes, dust, noise and inclement weather conditions.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, crouching, bending, and climbing for prolonged periods; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
