General Overview

Under direction; performs advanced semi-skilled work in construction and repair of sewers, plus all related structures; operates motorized equipment, drives trucks (dump truck, bulldozer, asphalt roller, etc.); reads blueprints and construction drawings; requisitions tools, equipment, materials and supplies. Performs other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below. Completion of a high school equivalent education plus one (1) year of responsible experience in sewer construction, maintenance and repair work. Must possess a valid State of Ohio, Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Tanker endorsement preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Advanced knowledge of sewer system maintenance repair and construction procedures; safety practices and procedures in construction, equipment operation, personal protection equipment; operation of light to medium heavy equipment as required. Basic knowledge of department policy and procedures (e.g. equipment, supplies, tools, and materials requisitions) ; inspection procedures. Ability to deal with problems involving few variables in a familiar context; recognize safety warnings and take appropriate action; communicate effectively; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; operate light to medium heavy equipment safely; instruct others; demonstrate physical fitness. Skill in operating light to medium heavy equipment; use hand held power/non-power tools and equipment; heavy truck driving; vehicle preventive maintenance; operational policies and procedures; read, copy and records figures accurately and maintains accurate records.

Job Duties

The duties listed below are intended to depict tasks performed by this classification. Operates light to medium heavy and advanced technical equipment used in the construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of pump station wet wells, treatment plants, sewer lines, hydrants, valves plus their related structures (e.g., drives dump/tank truck, bulldozer, asphalt roller; etc.); sets up and takes down construction equipment; instructs subordinates on the methods of construction and repair, proper operation and safety precautions for the operation of equipment; May respond to emergency situations. Performs semi-skilled tasks in the performance of sewer construction and repair work (e.g., manhole repair, carpentry, dig holes, etc.); using semi-heavy equipment to digs holes, backfills, tamps, unloads construction materials, etc.; cleans and maintains equipment. Discusses and resolves complaints with customers and property owners. Requisitions tools, equipment, materials and supplies as required for a daily assignment for referenced job tasks. Oversees sewer construction and repair in the absence of the supervisor giving consideration to safety and to ensure work is completed in a timely manner: secures equipment; maintains construction logs.

• May be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, high and low temperatures, water, and adverse weather conditions.
• Works with and around electrical components and power tools.
• May be exposed to hazards associated with the operation of power equipment, effluents of sewage system, maintenance of water system and work around construction sites.
• Work may require climbing, working in a confined area (access holes, manhole) in all types of inclement weather conditions.
• Normal hazards associated with chemicals used in water treatment facilities.

• Employee must demonstrate physical fitness and agility and move whole body in continuous labor.
• Typically requires lifting, sitting, walking, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, standing, talking, hearing, seeing.
• Requires various types of physical exertion such as prolonged bending, stooping, and lifting, walking on uneven terrain, and driving vehicles and/or equipment for long periods of time.
• Employee is required to reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, move and carry objects weighing up to 95 pounds with assistance repeatedly from one location to another.
• Job requires performance of heavy manual labor, use hands to finger, handles, or feel, and perform repetitive motions; move whole body in continuous or heavy labor.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.

Work Location: 33 Cole Ave. Extension. Akron, OH 44301

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. Overtime may be required.
