Consultant (Associate Track)

About LunchAssist

LunchAssist supports school nutrition leaders by simplifying compliance, strengthening programs, and providing high-quality training and tools. We work with 500+ school districts and operate at the intersection of school nutrition, compliance, and technology. We are a growing, California-certified, small, woman-owned business staffed by a badass team of school nutrition neRDs.

We provide consulting to school districts in California, advising across all areas of the School Nutrition Program (SNP) and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). We also offer training to school districts nationwide through online courses, live webinars, bilingual training videos, resources, and a proprietary software called LunchAssist PRO, which meets USDA professional standards and training requirements.

Overview

This role is designed for individuals who are ready to become high-impact consultants in school nutrition. At LunchAssist, consulting goes beyond technical expertise. Members of our team learn how to translate knowledge into clear guidance, training, and problem-solving across diverse districts. We provide accurate guidance to nutrition directors that is actually useful. Our clients come to us because we cut through government jargon and help them apply program regulations in ways that make sense for their operations and mitigate the risk of compliance issues down the road.

Our virtual workplace is fast-paced, highly collaborative, and impact-oriented. Successful candidates will bring strong experience in school nutrition programs, along with the humility to understand that consulting requires a distinct professional skill set. New hires will learn how to translate their expertise into effective client advisory, training, and problem-solving across all areas of the SNP and CACFP.

Associate Track

All new consultants enter a structured development period similar to supervised practice in a new specialty. New hires join a collaborative consulting pod where they immediately contribute by executing key components of client work. New hires will spend 12-18 months on this “Associate Track”, eventually building the confidence and skills to lead client relationships.

The Associate Track is designed to build:

  • Client advisory and communication skills
  • Problem-solving across varied district environments
  • Technical depth and breadth of knowledge across all SNP and CACFP program areas
  • Confidence and good judgment required for independent client management

During the first 12-18 months, new consultants on the Associate Track will support clients by:

  • Drafting client communications and follow-ups
  • Preparing action items from meetings and compliance documentation
  • Supporting menu planning, nutrient analysis, and crediting of recipes
  • Supporting SNP/CACFP Administrative and Procurement Reviews
  • Assisting with special projects, resource management tools, and state reporting
  • Contributing to both strategy and execution
  • Providing coverage to more experienced consultants when they are on leave

At LunchAssist, we are committed to building a team of school nutrition consultants who combine a wide breadth of programmatic knowledge, deep subject-matter expertise, and high-trust client advisory skills. We believe that great consultants are developed through guided, hands-on practice and peer-to-peer mentorship, not just prior experience in school nutrition.

Over time, consultants assume increasing responsibility, including leading portions of client interactions and progressing toward full client management.

Consulting at LunchAssist is both strategic and hands-on.

All consultants:

  • Operate within pods and contribute to shared delivery
  • Engage in both execution and advisory work
  • Maintain a balance of client work and internal contributions

In addition to client work, consultants contribute to internal priorities such as:

  • Developing training materials and resources
  • Supporting webinars and conferences
  • Improving tools, systems, and content

This work is a core component of the role and supports scalability across the organization.

As consultants progress, responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and leading client meetings (primarily via Zoom)
  • Advising school nutrition directors on USDA and State requirements (CDE)
  • Preparing clients for Administrative and Procurement Reviews
  • Contributing to projects (e.g., CEP/P2, bids and procurement, farm-to-school)
  • Developing training materials, tools, and resources
  • Speaking at webinars and conferences
  • Supporting and mentoring new consultants

Requirements

Must Have:

  • 5+ years of experience in school nutrition (district, State, or USDA)
  • Strong menu planning and compliance experience
  • Strong communication skills (with an emphasis on digital communications such as Zoom & email)
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and attention to detail
  • Organized, adaptable, collaborative, resourceful, and humble

Preferred:

  • Registered Dietitian
  • Experience conducting Administrative Reviews as a State auditor/reviewer
  • Native or fluent Spanish proficiency, with the ability to deliver training in Spanish

Who Thrives in This Role:

  • Growth-oriented individuals interested in consulting and who enjoy detailed, hands-on work
  • School nutrition professionals who value both strategy and execution
  • Strong communicators who build trust with clients and connect well with school nutrition leaders

Compensation

The salary range for this role is $75,000-$100,000. We typically start at the bottom of the range, and new hires have the opportunity for rapid salary growth based on performance and business needs.

Benefits

  • 15 vacation days, 14 holidays, 8 sick days
  • 401(k) with 4% match (immediate vesting)
  • Medical, dental, vision, short-term disability, and life insurance
  • $100/month home office stipend

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Full-time, exempt, remote (must provide home office set up, including computer)
  • Must be able to travel 10% of the time for conferences, in-person client meetings, or trainings
  • Availability required until 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time (prefer candidates located in the Western U.S.)
