Job Description
General Statement of Job
The Law Enforcement Trainer is responsible for delivering continuing education law enforcement training courses that meet Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) standards and requirements for law enforcement personnel in Texas. This includes preparing and conducting courses on topics such as criminal law, law enforcement procedures, ethics, defensive tactics, firearms training, and community policing. Additionally, the law enforcement trainer may collaborate with law enforcement agencies to address specific training needs.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Develop and instruct Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) continuing education courses.
- Ensure compliance with Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) rules and guidelines.
- Provide a complete lesson plan, clear learning objectives, instructor biography, approved class roster, original sign-in sheet, and course evaluation to the training coordinator for the training file.
- Enforce all student attendance and other standards set by TCOLE or the training advisory board.
- Distribute or present learning objectives to all students at the beginning of each course taught.
- Ensure all learning objectives are taught
- Maintains student and class records.
- Prepare, maintain, and submit reports of training within the timeframe specified by the Training Coordinator
- Complete and submit course documentation to Public Safety Compliance Specialist(s) at the end of the course.
- Maintain discipline and demeanor of each student during class
- Maintain a positive, productive training environment and handle behavior problems effectively.
- Communicate with students, staff and peers in a professional, respectful, and constructive manner.
- Travel throughout the College district, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
To qualify, one of the following must be met:
- High School Diploma/GED and (5) years of law enforcement experience.
- Bachelor's degree and (2) years of teaching experience.
Master's or Doctorate's degree preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
