Contract: Senior Advisor, Media Relations

    Job Description

    The Archdiocese of Detroit is seeking an experienced communications professional to serve as a Contracted Senior Advisor in Media Relations. Anticipated 12-month contract, with potential for renewal addition of 6-12 months. Anticipated work schedule 35-40 hours per week.
    This role will support media relations efforts by managing media inquiries, developing proactive story opportunities, preparing leaders for media engagement, and assisting with strategic communications initiatives that advance understanding of the Church's mission, ministries, and public witness. The contractor will work closely with the Associate Director of Public Relations, providing both day-to-day media relations support and strategic communications counsel, helping ensure accurate, timely, and mission-centered communications across a variety of audiences and platforms. 
     
    Key Responsibilities
    • Lead communications projects that support Archdiocesan priorities, initiatives, and events.
    • Develop and execute media relations strategies for major announcements and campaigns.
    • Identify and promote stories that highlight the mission and impact of Archdiocesan ministries, schools, and parishes.
    • Coordinate media opportunities, interviews, press events, and related communications activities.
    • Create and manage communication materials, including news releases, talking points, statements, and executive messaging.
    • Support communications planning and implementation for special projects, organizational initiatives, and sensitive issues.
    • Assist with crisis communications preparation projects and response efforts.
    • Monitor media coverage and emerging issues, providing recommendations and strategic guidance.
    • Build and maintain relationships with key media partners and community stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging across all communication channels.
    • Provide communications support and media preparation for Archdiocesan leaders and spokespersons.
    • Manage project timelines, deliverables, and communication plans to ensure successful execution of initiatives.
     
    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Public Affairs, English, or a related field.
    • 8+ years of professional experience in media relations, public relations, journalism, public affairs, crisis communications, or a related field.
    • Demonstrated success securing media coverage and managing relationships with reporters and news organizations.
    • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong understanding of media dynamics, news cycles, and reputation management.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and perform effectively under pressure.
    • Professional judgment, discretion, and experience handling sensitive matters.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and communications-related technologies.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record. A valid passport may be required depending on assignment needs.
       
      • Must have reliable transportation and ability to travel independently throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. Occasional regional, national, or other travel may be required based on archdiocesan priorities, media events, or major initiatives.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Knowledge of the Catholic Church, its teachings, ministries, and organizational structure.
    • Experience working with faith-based, nonprofit, educational, or mission-driven organizations.
    • Experience supporting crisis communications and high-profile issues.
    • APR accreditation, PRSA membership, or similar professional credentials.
    • Bilingual proficiency, particularly Spanish.
       
    This is an independent contractor engagement and is not an employment position. Contractors are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and business expenses unless otherwise specified in the contract.
