The Department of Mental Health, Metro Boston Area Office is seeking a highly organized individual in providing support to the Core Services Department across four Metro Boston Area DMH sites. The student intern will gain an understanding of facility operations for human service agencies and resources, with specific exposure to operations of both inpatient and outpatient mental health services. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in public health, behavioral health, project management, and general administration to gain experience in a mission-driven environment.

Note: This position is 37.5 hours per week, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday Friday; off Saturday and Sunday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Assist with project-based tasks related to facility operations, environment of care, and safety and security protocols. Tracking project timelines, contractor progress, and budgeting. Design and implement streamlined workflows and effective tools to optimize departmental project management.

  • Support financial planning processes by compiling data, generating insights, and contributing to forecasting and budgeting activities.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather financial information, reconcile discrepancies, and improve reporting efficiency. Maintain organized financial records and documentation to support audits and strategic decision-making.

  • Assist with expense tracking, budget monitoring, and cost analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost optimization.

  • Coordinate with the fiscal department and external vendors to obtain quotes, prepare purchase orders, and confirm receipt of goods, while supporting inventory management by tracking supply levels, maintaining accurate records, and assisting with timely ordering and restocking to ensure operational continuity.

  • Participate in building rounds and perform environmental spot checks, identifying safety and security risks, surveying space utilization, checking management of equipment/supplies, and noting all action items and non-compliant findings. Compiling all observations into a report with established corrective action where necessary.

  • Support fleet management operations by coordinating vehicle maintenance and repair schedules, assisting with transportation service logistics, and ensuring timely servicing of assets. Monitor and analyze cost trends related to fleet expenses to identify efficiencies and perform detailed monthly reconciliation of fuel receipts to maintain accurate financial records and accountability.

  • Attend departmental and area weekly, monthly or quarterly meetings, actively listen and participate, and document key discussions, decisions, and action items. Prepare clear, organized notes for contribution to meeting minutes.

  • Assist in evaluating and reconfiguring the facilitys key inventory to maintain effective access control. Determine gaps in workflow, supply management, expense related risks, and other security or operational deficiencies.

  • Provide general administrative support to the Core Services Department, including filing, data entry, digitizing records and other related tasks as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint).

  • An understanding of HIPAA and protection of PHI.

  • Experience or knowledge of accounting practices and reporting.

  • Bilingual or multilingual fluency.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong written communication skills.

  • Interest in public health, behavioral health, project management, and general administration, or related fields preferred; interest or experience in finance or behavioral and mental health is an additional asset.

Period of Service: May 26, 2026 through September 4, 2026

Additional Information:

  • Benefits are unavailable with the exception of sick leave accruals.

  • All employees will be paid on a biweekly basis and must have direct deposit.

  • The salary for this position is $19.00 an hour.

  • Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

  • Days Off: Saturday and Sunday
