Control Center Operator Trainee

SUMMARY

The Control Center Operator Trainee is an hourly, non-bargaining unit, administrative position requiring constant exercise of discretion and independent judgement with respect to load management, outage management, switching orders, clearances and power quality including the assignment and direction of employees in safe and efficient operating procedures in their area of responsibility. The proper performances of these and other duties and responsibilities is critical to the financial future of the Cooperative and the rates paid by both the Cooperative and certain key accounts for electricity. This position coordinates with the CEO, COO, trouble crews, Director of Operations, Chief Communications Officer and the Director of Safety. The CCOT reports to the Director of Operations and he/she has no direct reports, although will assign and direct line crews and other employees during their shift in safe operating procedures when responding to outages, power quality problems, switching clearances, voltage problems and generator management and maintenance.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Providing quality communications with:
  • GEC members
  • GEC employees and management
  • GEC contractors
  • Ensure all communication is properly documented

• Outage Management:
  • Outage evaluation
  • Direct crews to restore power
  • Properly program computerized phone system
  • Ensure safe work practices by implementing all necessary switching and clearance orders
  • Coordinate with managers and outside authorities
  • Ensure all outages are properly documented

• Load Management:
  • Set point management
  • Interruptible customer communication
  • Generator startup and shutdown
  • Monitor generators while in operation
  • Ensure all load management activities are properly documented
  • Daily management
  • Computer operation of load management screen

• Safety
  • Participate with switching orders under CCO, CCCO, or NCCO
  • Generator clearances
  • Public safety
  • Spill prevention
  • Ensure all safety items are properly documented

• Monitor the security system and also the SCADA system
• Coordinate service orders and maintenance orders with Member Service Representative and infield employees
• Constantly seek cost saving methods, without affecting quality of service
• Utilize system tools to maximize efficient use of line crew times and strive to reduce unnecessary overtime

• Positively promote GEC programs such as: Safety, System Restoration, Strategic Planning, Surge Protection, Outdoor Lighting, etc.
• Maintain an attitude of respect for other persons and property, which will reflect well on the Cooperative.
• Responsible for the safety of oneself and that of others, by knowing his/her job and giving it his/her complete attention.
• Remain knowledgeable and familiar with GEC’s safety manual, policies, procedures and all OSHA rules and regulations.
• Participate in all safety programs and assist in the training of subordinates.
• Enforce all safety rules, policies, work practices and regulations.
• Maintain top priority on safety.
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

By virtue of education, experience, knowledge, ability, skill or personal attributes, applicants for this position should meet the following specifications:

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Knowledge: Must know how to use all office machines and equipment and have knowledge of basic business practices and computer; must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.); must be able to use a two-way radio
• Must be able to work on the Control Center Training program after six months of on-the-job training. Expected to complete a minimum of two (2) modules within four (4) months of beginning the program.
• Workload may vary, deadline driven; volume of overtime varies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB

On a frequent basis: lifting, pushing, pulling up to 25 pounds, bending at the waist, gripping tools and objects, stretching or reaching, kneeling, standing, sittings, walking, crouching, twisting (rotating body while in a sitting position), twisting (rotating body while in a standing position), grasping or gripping (to grasp with thumb in opposition to fingers or palm), driving automobile equipment and working alone.
