Control Technician (Fire/Security)

Position performs skilled maintenance, repair, and installation of fire alarm, intrusion detection, suppression systems, clocks, controls, and other associated equipment. Works independently and exercises sound judgment in carrying out standard operations, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with safety procedures and requirements.

Duties include:

Perform skilled maintenance on systems maintained and operated by Technical Maintenance, either independently or in coordination with other trades, Control Technicians, Facilities Engineers, and Fire Protection Engineers.

Tasks include:

• Perform installation, modification, troubleshooting, testing, repair, calibration, and operation of electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment used in fire alarm and suppression systems, intrusion alarm systems, access control systems, CCTV, intercoms, central clocks, master clock control systems, and other low-voltage control systems.
• Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment, including computer-based fire alarm, access control, intrusion/security field devices, and related interface hardware.
  Lay out, fabricate, and install electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment.
  Update electronic and hard-copy system drawings in as-built format to maintain accurate system records and master CADD files.
• Read and interpret blueprints, plans, CADD drawings, and sketches to estimate labor and material requirements. Provide technical support and information to Facilities Management, Facilities Development and Capital Budget engineers, designers, architects, and consultants as needed.
  Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Building Automation Control System (BACS) field devices and interface hardware.
• Follow all applicable safety requirements and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Tasks include:

Materials Management

Tasks include:

• Order, receive, and maintain inventory of fire alarm, security, intrusion, access control, and related system components used for the repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical, electronic, and mechanical control systems.
• Maintain adequate stock levels to support ongoing maintenance, repair, and project needs.

Performed other related duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Washington State 06 Electrical License.
• One year of journey-level experience installing and/or maintaining fire alarm, security, access control, intrusion detection, fire suppression, and CCTV systems in an institutional, commercial, or industrial environment.
• Experience working in sensitive or occupied environments, including offices, classrooms, residence halls, and restrooms.
• Valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one prior to employment, to operate state-owned vehicles and travel to work locations.
• Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and recordkeeping skills.
• Proficiency with computer hardware and software used for work order tracking and time reporting.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
• Ability to manage time effectively and work under pressure to meet project schedules and deadlines.
• NICET Level II certification, or the ability to obtain certification within six months of hire.

• Two additional years of skilled or journey-level experience installing and/or maintaining fire alarm systems.
• Two additional years of skilled or journey-level experience installing and/or maintaining security and intrusion systems.
• Two additional years of skilled or journey-level experience installing and/or maintaining access control and CCTV systems.
• Knowledge of Edwards SDU programming protocols and/or FireWorks fire alarm systems.
• Experience working alongside related trades, including carpentry, welding, sheet metal, electrical, and plumbing, in an institutional, commercial, or industrial environment.
• Working knowledge of applicable NEC, NFPA, and Washington Administrative Code (WAC) requirements.
• Ability to identify, document, and report NFPA code deficiencies and complete related preventive maintenance documentation.
• Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.
• Ability to perform work responsibly and in accordance with WWU policies, procedures, and standards.
• Fulfill Integrated Safety, Security, and Access Control responsibilities as assigned.
• Experience conducting auditability testing and radio frequency testing.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making to identify and implement effective solutions.
• Knowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, standard job safety practices, and the proper use of respiratory protection equipment.
