Lead Accounting Operations for a Growing Commercial Real Estate Organization
A well-established and growing real estate investment and property management organization is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee accounting operations and provide financial leadership across a diverse commercial real estate portfolio.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys managing complex financial operations, mentoring accounting staff, and partnering with executive leadership to drive sound financial decision-making.
The Controller will work closely with senior leadership and play a key role in maintaining financial accuracy, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance across multiple entities and properties.

Position Overview
The Controller will oversee the day-to-day management of the accounting department and be responsible for all aspects of general ledger accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, compliance, and property accounting activities.
This position requires a strong understanding of commercial real estate accounting, financial statement preparation, lease administration, budgeting, tax compliance, and team leadership.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & General Ledger Management
  • Oversee all general ledger accounting activities for a portfolio of commercial real estate assets
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions
  • Maintain accounting records in accordance with company policies and accounting standards
  • Monitor internal controls and accounting procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Review financial transactions and reconciliations prepared by accounting staff
Financial Statement Preparation
  • Coordinate and oversee preparation of:
    • Monthly financial statements
    • Balance sheets
    • Income statements
    • Cash flow statements
    • Management reporting packages
  • Analyze financial performance and provide insights to leadership
  • Prepare supporting schedules and reporting for management review
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
  • Partner with property management and leadership teams to develop annual budgets
  • Prepare forecasts and variance analyses
  • Monitor property performance against budget expectations
  • Identify trends and opportunities for operational improvement
Property Accounting & Lease Administration
  • Review commercial lease agreements and prepare lease abstracts
  • Ensure accurate recording of lease terms and financial obligations
  • Oversee tenant billing processes, including:
    • Rent charges
    • Escalation billings
    • Utility and electric billings
    • Additional tenant reimbursements
  • Support property managers with financial reporting and operational analysis
Cash Management & Banking
  • Manage organizational cash flow and liquidity requirements
  • Review and approve monthly bank reconciliations
  • Monitor banking relationships and account activity
  • Oversee property loan payments and mortgage compliance requirements
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable Oversight
  • Work closely with Accounts Payable personnel to ensure:
    • Proper coding of invoices
    • Accurate expense allocation
    • Timely vendor payments
  • Collaborate with Accounts Receivable teams to:
    • Review rent roll postings
    • Monitor collections
    • Resolve tenant payment issues
    • Improve receivable performance
Tax & Regulatory Compliance
  • Prepare and review quarterly sales tax filings
  • Ensure compliance with applicable tax regulations
  • Maintain depreciation schedules and fixed asset records
  • Support annual tax filings and compliance reporting
  • Coordinate year-end activities and preparation of supporting documentation
Audit & External Reporting
  • Prepare annual financial statements for review by external accounting firms
  • Coordinate year-end work papers and audit support schedules
  • Serve as a key contact during audit and tax review processes
  • Ensure timely completion of financial reporting requirements
Leadership & Team Development
  • Review and supervise the work of accounting staff
  • Mentor team members and support professional development
  • Promote best practices and continuous process improvement
  • Assist with implementation and refinement of accounting procedures and internal controls
Special Projects
  • Participate in strategic financial initiatives and process improvement projects
  • Support acquisitions, property transitions, and other business activities as needed
  • Perform ad hoc financial analysis and reporting requests

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong general ledger accounting background
  • Experience preparing financial statements and management reports
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
Preferred
  • Commercial real estate accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of real estate tax and accounting principles
  • Experience with:
    • Lease accounting
    • Property management accounting
    • Job costing
    • Construction accounting
  • Experience with Sage 300 or similar accounting software
  • Familiarity with property financing and mortgage administration
