Position Summary:
We are seeking a proactive and organized Controller to oversee our growing organization’s accounting operations, ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance, and effective internal controls. This position will serve as a “trusted advisor” to internal and external stakeholders, always maintaining trust and confidentiality. Must have experience working in construction and/or manufacturing.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing activities. Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and analysis.
- Manage relationships and coordinate annual engagements with bankers, CPA’s, surety and insurance agents.
- Assist with preparation of the Company’s annual tax return.
- Manage 401K audits and/or year-end testing.
- Assist with annual insurance renewals and audits.
- Develop and manage budgeting and reforecasting processes, perform “what-if” scenarios and analyses.
- Manage job costing and reporting
- Calculate and update equipment and overhead burden rates
- Analyze job profitability and performance
- Coordinate project reviews with executives, estimators and project managers
- Provide financial strategy recommendations to CEO/President and executive team.
- Identify and address potential financial risks for the company.
- Establish, implement and maintain effective internal controls within the organization.
- Ensure adherence to applicable accounting standards (such as US GAAP) as well as compliance with federal, state, and local laws and rules for financial reporting and/or taxes.
- Identify, develop, and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Participate in and provide support for N.S. Giles’ strategic planning process.
- Contribute to and collaborate on departmental and company-wide initiatives/projects
- Perform and/or supervise treasury management functions, including bank reconciliations, cash flow forecasting and covenant compliance.
- Maintain asset schedules, perform rent vs. buy analysis and determine financing options for acquisition of vehicles, machinery and equipment.
- Analyze business segments and highlight opportunities to reduce operating costs and/or increase revenue.
- Streamline systems; identify and implement best practices; leverage technology; strive for continuous process improvement & increased productivity.
- Create and/or improve reporting and analysis that effectively “tells the story” without confusion and/or unnecessary complication.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
- CPA is highly desirable.
- 1–3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a construction or skilled trades environment preferred.
- Familiarity with construction roles, terminology, and workforce dynamics are a strong plus.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient with accounting systems.
- Proficient in Excel.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally to job sites, and training locations.
Physical Demands
This role is based in an office environment with potential interaction at job sites, training facilities, and community events. A willingness to occasionally wear PPE and understand field work conditions is important.
