    Job Description

    Job Description

We are partnering with a mission-driven regional nonprofit organization who are seeking an operational and strategic Controller.

    \n

    \n

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, internal financial controls, financial reporting, and compliance systems across the organization. This role will serve as a trusted strategic advisor to executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and committee chairs—ensuring the financial integrity, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability of a growing organization.

    \n

    \n

    What You’ll Do

    \n
    • \n
    • Direct day-to-day accounting operations (AP, AR, Payroll, GL) and lead a high-performing finance team. Establish standards for monthly close, review general ledger reconciliations, and produce timely, GAAP-compliant monthly financial statements, board packages, variance analyses, and projections.
    • \n
    • Own the design, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of internal accounting controls. Proactively identify operational/compliance risks in partnership with the CFO and executive team, serving as a primary liaison to the Audit Committee.
    • \n
    • Direct all audit preparation activities (annual financial statement audit, 403(b) benefit plan audit, and tax/information returns including Form 990). Draft financial statements and footnotes, leading technical accounting research under U.S. GAAP for nonprofit entities.
    • \n
    • Monitor daily cash positions, line of credit usage, and short-/long-term cash flow needs. Oversee bank and investment reconciliations while structuring robust cash management controls.
    • \n
    • Partner with finance leadership to drive operational evolution toward standardized, paperless, and automated workflows—improving reporting accuracy and eliminating single points of failure.
    • \n
    • Manage, mentor, and build capacity across exempt and non-exempt finance staff. Act as a collaborative, customer-service-oriented finance partner to non-finance department heads and regional leadership.
    • \n
    \n

    \n

    What You Need to Succeed

    \n
    • \n
    • Experience: 7–12 years of progressive accounting experience in financial accounting, financial reporting, or controllership, including at least 3–5 years of direct supervisory management experience.
    • \n
    • Deep, technical working knowledge of U.S. GAAP accounting and reporting requirements specific to not-for-profit organizations (including Massachusetts and IRS regulatory compliance).
    • \n
    • Strong analytical capabilities with advanced Microsoft Excel and enterprise accounting software skills. Experience with modern ERP systems is highly preferred.
    • \n
    • Exceptional judgment, proactive problem-solving ability, outstanding written/spoken communication, and a strong track record of project management and internal customer service.
    • \n
    • Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. A CPA/CMA license, an advanced degree, or prior public accounting experience is a strong plus.
