Job Details

Position Overview
The Controller role seeks an experienced accounting professional with at least five years of relevant experience. This individual will lead a finance and accounting team, manage cross-functional projects, and collaborate with stakeholders across multiple levels. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining strong governance and internal controls. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role plays a key leadership function in ensuring smooth daily operations while supporting the broader institutional mission.

Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the integrity and effectiveness of the organization’s accounting systems and financial operations. This includes policy development, financial reporting, internal controls, audit coordination, and budget support. The role ensures accurate financial data is available to guide strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary resource on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and tax-related matters
  • Manage daily cash flow, balancing operational needs with investment strategies
  • Oversee transactional accounting, including accounts payable review and approval
  • Lead the month-end close process, including reconciliations and financial statement preparation
  • Reconcile billing systems with the general ledger
  • Maintain and manage endowment accounting, including restricted funds and reporting
  • Oversee and maintain the chart of accounts and proper expense allocation
  • Manage banking relationships and ensure compliance with financial covenants
  • Coordinate and lead annual audits, including financial, compliance, and tax filings
  • Partner with internal departments to reconcile federal and state funding programs
  • Prepare required financial and regulatory reports (e.g., FISAP)
  • Oversee accounts receivable and billing functions
  • Supervise and develop accounting and finance staff
  • Participate in retirement plan oversight as a fiduciary
  • Support additional projects and initiatives as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly manages accounting and finance personnel, including key operational roles

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management experience
  • CPA designation preferred
