A growing NYC-based general contractor is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead accounting and financial operations. This individual will oversee financial reporting, job costing, and cash flow management across multiple active construction projects, partnering closely with ownership and operations to drive profitability and financial discipline.
Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations including GL, AP/AR, payroll, and month-end close
Manage job costing and project accounting, ensuring accurate tracking of costs, budgets, and profitability by project
Prepare and review Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, including revenue recognition and percentage-of-completion accounting
Monitor project performance and partner with project managers to analyze variances, cost overruns, and margin trends
Lead cash flow management, including forecasting, collections, and vendor payments
Ensure compliance with GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards
Manage external relationships with auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners
Develop and improve internal controls, processes, and reporting capabilities
Produce financial statements and reporting packages for ownership
7 12+ years of accounting experience, with significant experience in construction or project-based environments
Strong expertise in job costing and WIP accounting (critical)
Experience working for a general contractor or subcontractor
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA preferred but not required
Experience with construction accounting systems (e.g., Sage 300, Procore, QuickBooks Construction) is a plus
Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with non-finance stakeholders
