Controller / Director of Finance (non-profit)

Position Summary

A well-established nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Controller/Director of Finance to provide strategic leadership for the organization's financial management.

As a member of the leadership team, this individual will partner closely with departmental leaders to support long-term planning, operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and organizational growth. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with a collaborative leadership style and a passion for mission-driven work.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Accounting

  • Direct all aspects of the organization's financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and cash flow oversight.
  • Develop and maintain financial models to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide leadership with timely analysis, recommendations, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant accounting practices in accordance with applicable financial standards and nonprofit reporting requirements.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Manage banking relationships, investment accounts, and liquidity planning.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with department heads and organizational leadership.
  • Coordinate external audits and assist in the preparation of tax filings and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Oversee administrative operations, employee benefits administration, payroll coordination, insurance programs, and risk management initiatives.
  • Support employee lifecycle processes, including onboarding, personnel documentation, and offboarding procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with employment regulations and stay informed on changes impacting nonprofit organizations.
  • Maintain confidential employee and organizational records with professionalism and discretion.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing accounting operations, financial planning, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and financial compliance requirements.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across departments and with external stakeholders.
