The Role:
OWL Services is seeking an experienced Controller with a strong background in construction accounting. This position will be based out of our Fort Worth, TX office. The Controller will oversee key accounting functions, with a strong focus on construction accounting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, financial reporting, forecasting, cash flow management, and team leadership.
Responsibilities:
Revenue Recognition
- Apply the Percentage of Completion method to accurately recognize revenue.
- Calculate earned revenue based on actual costs incurred compared to total estimated project costs.
Work-in-Progress (WIP) Reporting
- Prepare monthly WIP reports for all active projects.
- Analyze under-billings and over-billings and identify potential cash flow risks.
- Ensure accurate tracking of project costs for WIP reporting.
Cost Tracking
- Monitor project budgets, including actual labor and material expenses.
- Identify cost overruns and variances early and communicate findings to project managers.
- Oversee the tracking of labor, materials, and overhead to ensure accurate project reporting.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Update Estimates at Completion (EAC) for ongoing projects.
- Prepare and manage annual budgets.
- Partner with project managers to develop realistic project budgets.
- Review project performance and variance reports and provide recommendations as needed.
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
- Lead the month-end close process.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Prepare monthly income statements, balance sheets, and project-specific financial analyses.
- Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and compliant with company policies.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Maintain strong financial controls and accounting procedures across the company.
- Ensure compliance with applicable financial regulations and company accounting policies.
- Manage local, state, and federal tax compliance, insurance requirements, and other regulatory requirements.
Cash Flow Management
- Monitor cash flow requirements for current and upcoming projects.
- Prepare and maintain 13-week cash flow and liquidity forecasts.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with operations and project managers to review project performance and financial results.
- Provide financial insight and recommendations to support business decisions.
- Collaborate with leadership to improve financial processes and project profitability.
Team Leadership
- Supervise and provide direction to Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll staff.
- Support the development and growth of the accounting team.
- Establish clear expectations and promote accountability across the accounting function.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Strong experience in construction accounting, including Percentage of Completion revenue recognition and WIP reporting.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with construction ERP and accounting software, such as Sage.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial reporting.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
