A well-established Los Angeles-based educational institution with high visitor traffic, public programs, and multiple earned-revenue streams, is hiring a hands-on Controller to lead core accounting operations, tighten close discipline, and bring structure to a busy, high-transaction environment.

This is a true controllership seat (GAAP, close, audit, controls), not an FP&A/strategy-first finance role.

Salary: $145,000–$160,000 base DOE + benefits
Location: Fully Onsite in Westwood/Brentwood area

What you’ll do

  • Own the month-end close end-to-end and ensure consistent, on-time reporting
  • Lead the organization’s audit process (PBC, auditor management, issue resolution)
  • Strengthen accounting policies, internal controls, and process rigor in a midstream environment
  • Manage and mentor a small accounting team (including oversight of AP workflow and discipline)
  • Support accurate accounting for diverse revenue sources (programs, events, memberships, contributions, etc.)
  • Improve reporting structure and help optimize how subledgers and operational systems map to the GL

What we’re looking for (must-haves)

  • Proven, hands-on Controller / Accounting Lead experience with true ownership of close + GL
  • Strong GAAP foundation and confidence operating as the technical accounting owner
  • Audit leadership experience (you’ve run audits, not just participated)
  • People leadership (managed 3+), with a track record of elevating team capabilities
  • Comfortable stepping into a messy / transitional environment and bringing order quickly
  • Able to work fully onsite in Los Angeles

Nice-to-haves (not required)

  • CPA (strong plus)
  • Nonprofit experience, 990 exposure, fund accounting, restricted funds
  • Experience in organizations with multiple revenue lines and high transaction volume
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud/Financial Edge or comparable systems
  • Subledger integration / reporting improvements partnering with IT or consultants
