This role is critical in supporting organizational growth and operational excellence, particularly within a construction or construction development environment.

The Controller is responsible for coordinating accounting policies, practices, processes, financial data, and reporting, while also managing day-to-day cash flow and internal controls. This individual partners closely with the COO/CFO and operational leaders to support planning, budgeting, and performance analysis.

The Controller leads a team of accounting professionals and collaborates with department leaders to deliver accurate, timely, and actionable financial insights to management and the Board of Directors. This role reports directly to the COO/CFO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, account reconciliations, and transaction processing (AR, AP, GL), as well as purchase order controls.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and preparation of financial statements.
  • Partner with the COO/CFO to develop annual plans and budgets; monitor and analyze performance against those plans.
  • Support analysis and identification of opportunities to improve financial performance and operational effectiveness.
  • Lead, hire, train, and develop the accounting team.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting for stakeholders across the organization.
  • Manage preparation for annual financial audits and tax filings; coordinate with external auditors and present findings to senior leadership and the Audit Committee.
  • Actively manage cash flow, banking relationships, and liquidity planning in partnership with the COO/CFO.
  • Review accounting data to identify discrepancies, ensure proper accruals, and enforce accurate application of accounting principles.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry practices; establish policies and procedures to ensure compliance (including government reporting requirements such as A-133, where applicable).
  • Serve as administrator for financial systems, including Sage 300/Timberline or similar ERP systems, and provide internal training.
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems, processes, and workflows to ensure efficiency and scalability.
  • Strengthen internal controls and recommend enhancements as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Controller, preferably within a small to mid-size (>$40MM) organization.
  • Experience in construction, real estate development, or construction-related industries strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with Sage 300 (Timberline) or comparable accounting/ERP systems required.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams while collaborating effectively across departments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize, implement process improvements, and handle confidential information.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States (no sponsorship available).
