$135,000–$160,000 Per Year
Controller — Construction/Mechanical Services (Regional)
Phoenix, AZ | Hybrid | Direct Hire | $135,000–$160,000
A national mechanical and specialty contracting company with 20+ locations and significant regional operations in Phoenix is seeking a hands-on Regional Controller to lead accounting and financial operations for its Southwest portfolio. This is a direct-hire opportunity reporting to senior finance leadership with visibility across the full organization.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead the monthly general ledger close process including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and timely financial reporting across multiple entities
- Own and maintain WIP (Work in Progress) and CIP (Construction in Progress) schedules with a strong command of BIE (Billings in Excess) and CIE (Costs in Excess). This is a core function of the role, not a secondary one
- Perform and oversee cleanup and reconciliation of historical accounts; comfort working through a backlog of 6+ months is expected
- Partner with operations and project management on revenue recognition, percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, change orders, and forecast accuracy
- Manage regional receivables, sales and use tax compliance, and operational finance activities
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis for regional leadership
- Develop and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Directly mentor and train a team of Senior Accountants, with the expectation of building their technical skills in construction accounting
- Coordinate with external auditors on year-end audit processes and supporting schedules
- Ensure full compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and corporate policy
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a meaningful portion in construction, HVAC, plumbing, mechanical contracting, or a related project-based environment. This background is required, not preferred
- Deep, hands-on fluency with WIP/CIP schedules and BIE/CIE accounting treatment; candidates without this will not be considered
- Proficiency in Sage (Sage 300 CRE or Sage Intacct Construction strongly preferred)
- Experience with Procore a plus
- Demonstrated ability to work through reconciliation backlog and bring accounts current in a fast-moving environment
- Proven track record of leading, developing, and training junior accounting staff
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred but not required
- Multi-entity or multi-location experience strongly preferred
- Strong communicator who can work cross-functionally with operations, project management, and executive leadership
