Our client is a well-established, private equity-backed specialty contractor serving commercial and industrial customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The organization operates with the entrepreneurial culture of a locally managed business while benefiting from the resources, financial strength, and growth initiatives of a larger parent company.

As the company continues to expand through organic growth and strategic acquisitions, they are seeking an experienced Controller to serve as the senior financial leader for the region.

Position Summary

The Controller will oversee all accounting, financial reporting, project accounting, cash management, and internal control activities for a growing specialty contracting business. This individual will act as a strategic business partner to operations leadership while ensuring compliance with corporate reporting requirements and maintaining accurate financial visibility across multiple projects.

The ideal candidate will bring strong construction accounting expertise, hands-on leadership experience, and a deep understanding of percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, Work-in-Process (WIP) reporting, and AIA billing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee general ledger activity, account reconciliations, fixed assets, accruals, and intercompany transactions.
  • Coordinate annual audits and support relationships with external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable financial, tax, and reporting requirements.

Construction Accounting & Project Controls

  • Manage project accounting activities including job costing, revenue recognition, WIP schedules, and contract profitability analysis.
  • Oversee percentage-of-completion accounting for long-term construction and service contracts.
  • Partner closely with Project Managers and Operations leadership to monitor project performance, identify cost variances, and improve forecasting accuracy.
  • Review project budgets, change orders, commitments, and cost-to-complete estimates.

Billing, Cash Management & Vendor Oversight

  • Oversee all customer billing activities, including AIA billing, progress billings, and change order management.
  • Monitor accounts receivable performance, collections, and aging trends.
  • Lead cash flow forecasting and working capital management initiatives.
  • Supervise accounts payable, vendor compliance documentation, subcontractor payments, and purchasing controls.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Business Analysis

  • Lead annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Deliver meaningful variance analysis and financial insights to executive leadership.
  • Develop KPI reporting and operational metrics to support decision-making.
  • Assist ownership and senior leadership with strategic planning and growth initiatives.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and mentor accounting staff responsible for AP, AR, payroll, and general accounting functions.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate effectively with executive leadership, project management, operations, HR, and corporate finance teams.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
