A bit about us:

A well-established nonprofit organization in the Atlanta area is seeking a Controller to lead day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, close, audit, compliance, and accounting team management.

This is a hands-on leadership role reporting to the CFO/CAO and working closely with finance leadership, department directors, and a four-person accounting team. The ideal candidate will bring strong nonprofit accounting experience, CPA credentials, team leadership experience, and the ability to operate in a complex, multi-program environment.

Job Details

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including AP, AR, general ledger, banking, reconciliations, and cash management
  • Lead monthly and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Prepare internal financial statements, budget variance analysis, and management reporting
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, FASB guidance, internal controls, and organizational policies
  • Manage accounting for restricted funds, allocations, and multi-program activity
  • Lead annual financial audit and 403(b) audit processes
  • Serve as primary liaison with external auditors and prepare audit schedules / PBC items
  • Oversee federal and state reporting requirements, including Forms 5500, sales tax, and excise tax filings
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow projections, and financial analysis
  • Supervise, develop, and mentor a four-person accounting team
  • Partner with department directors and senior leadership as a finance resource
  • Support process improvement, system optimization, accounting workflows, and data integrity
  • Serve as a key accounting system administrator and finance systems contact

Qualifications
  • 5–10 years of accounting and finance experience
  • CPA required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or closely related field required
  • Nonprofit accounting experience required
  • Staff management experience required
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit GAAP, ASC 958, restricted activity, and nonprofit financial statement presentation
  • Experience with complex, multi-program, or multi-fund organizations preferred
  • Sage Intacct experience preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong audit, close, reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, and compliance experience
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to partner with non-financial leaders
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing competing deadlines
