Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for leading the company's accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and disciplined cash management. This individual will oversee all accounting functions while partnering with operations and project management to improve profitability, forecasting, and financial decision-making in a fast-paced construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership

  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close process.
  • Develop budgets, forecasts, and financial models.
  • Analyze financial performance and recommend improvements.
  • Present financial results to executive leadership.

Construction Accounting

  • Manage Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and revenue recognition.
  • Monitor job costing, project profitability, and labor utilization.
  • Review project budgets, change orders, and cost-to-complete estimates.
  • Ensure proper accounting for retainage, progress billings, and subcontractor payments.
  • Partner with project managers to identify financial risks and opportunities.

Cash Management

  • Oversee cash flow forecasting and liquidity management.
  • Manage banking relationships and debt compliance.
  • Improve collections and accounts receivable performance.
  • Optimize working capital.

Accounting Operations

  • Lead Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and General Ledger functions.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Coordinate annual audits and tax preparation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations.

Leadership

  • Hire, coach, and develop the accounting team.
  • Build scalable financial processes as the company grows.
  • Collaborate with operations, estimating, HR, and executive leadership.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
  • 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience.
  • Construction, engineering, or specialty contracting experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • WIP schedules
    • Percentage-of-completion accounting
    • Job costing
    • Revenue recognition
    • Retainage
    • Payroll and subcontractor accounting
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as Sage 300 CRE, Vista by Viewpoint, CMiC, Foundation, or similar.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
