Controls Engineer – 2nd Shift

Location: Tuscaloosa, AL
Employment Type: Direct Hire / Full-Time (FTE)
Shift: 2nd Shift | 7:00 PM – 4:00 AM
Work Environment: Fully On-Site
Salary Range: $90,000 – $115,000 base annually

Job Summary

The Controls Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining control systems to reduce machine downtime and improve overall system efficiency in a fast-paced, Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing environment. This role supports plant and departmental goals through continuous improvement initiatives and collaboration within a high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement software and hardware modifications to improve machine efficiency and product quality
  • Troubleshoot, modify, and program PLC systems to resolve issues and optimize performance
  • Maintain and support multiple machinery systems within a complex assembly plant
  • Coordinate and oversee work performed by outside contractors, vendors, and suppliers
  • Collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and production teams to ensure optimal production line performance
  • Maintain accurate documentation for machine parameters, program changes, drawings, diagrams, and manuals
  • Manage requisitions for tools, equipment, and supplies
  • Ensure adequate spare parts inventory to minimize production downtime
  • Support preventive maintenance programs and asset management systems
  • Assist with new equipment and production launches as required
  • Maintain proper housekeeping and comply with ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 procedures and processes

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of related experience in manufacturing or controls engineering (5–6 years preferred)
  • Experience working closely with plant maintenance teams
  • Strong PLC programming and troubleshooting experience, including:
    • Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix)
    • Ability to read and modify ladder logic
  • Experience programming and supporting HMI systems (PanelView or similar)
  • Experience with industrial automation equipment, including FANUC and/or ABB robotics and vision systems
  • Experience with electric torque control systems (Atlas Copco, Stanley)
  • Siemens PLC programming experience is a plus

Preferred / Bonus Qualifications

  • Ability to supervise maintenance personnel during absences or vacation periods of the Maintenance Engineer
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and teamwork skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • High level of self-motivation and accountability
