Cullerton Group has a new opportunity for a Controls Engineer 3. The work will be done onsite full-time in Mapleton, IL. This is a long-term 12-month position that can lead to permanent employment with our client. Compensation is up to $54/hr + full benefits (vision, dental, health insurance, 401k, and holiday pay).
Job Summary
Cullerton Group is seeking a Controls Engineer to support advanced manufacturing and foundry automation initiatives within a large-scale industrial environment. This role will focus on controls system design, troubleshooting, programming, upgrades, and continuous improvement projects supporting automated production processes. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to improve system reliability, implement controls enhancements, and support automation technologies including PLCs, HMIs, robotics, and machine safety systems. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge automation projects while helping establish controls engineering standards that can be leveraged across multiple facilities.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and support control systems from concept through implementation and startup completion
• Program, troubleshoot, and maintain Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMI systems, and automation equipment
• Support robotic systems, including programming, troubleshooting, and process optimization
• Analyze manufacturing processes and implement controls improvements to increase efficiency, reliability, and safety
• Perform technical calculations, system evaluations, firmware/software upgrades, and root-cause troubleshooting for controls-related issues
Required Qualifications
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (7+ years accepted without a degree)
• Minimum 5 years of controls engineering, automation engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related industrial automation experience
• Strong experience with Allen-Bradley PLC programming
• Experience with HMI programming and industrial control systems
• Experience with Fanuc robotic programming and robotic automation systems
• Knowledge of control systems engineering, electrical systems, motor controls, and industrial automation
• Strong troubleshooting, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with machine safety design, implementation, and integration
• Experience supporting foundry, manufacturing, heavy industrial, or automated production environments
• Experience leading small-to-medium automation projects
• Familiarity with firmware upgrades, controls documentation, and process improvement initiatives
• Experience mentoring junior engineers or providing technical leadership within automation teams
