Location: Charlotte, NC (Onsite)
The Controls Engineer is responsible for programming, installing, commissioning, and supporting automated material handling and mobile automation systems. This role works closely with cross-functional teams and customers to deliver safe, reliable, and high-quality automation solutions while supporting system improvements and long-term performance.
Program and configure automated control systems for industrial automation applications
Support onsite installation, commissioning, testing, and system verification
Provide technical training to customers and internal stakeholders
Support system modifications, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives
Ensure all work complies with safety, quality, and company standards
Execute project tasks in alignment with defined schedules and milestones
Assist with the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, including operations and maintenance materials
Communicate project status and technical updates to project leadership
Maintain accurate documentation and records using approved systems and formats
Follow established company policies, procedures, and best practices
Comply with all applicable health, safety, and industry regulations
Actively support continuous improvement initiatives
Engage in ongoing technical and professional development
Contribute positively to team culture and collaborative problem-solving efforts
Perform additional duties as required to support project and business needs
To be successful in this role, candidates should demonstrate the following:
Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial automation or controls engineering
Strong PLC programming experience, including structured text.
Experience with automated systems, such as material handling, mobile automation, or motion-based platforms
Ability to integrate, troubleshoot, and support complex automation systems
Electrical aptitude with the ability to safely troubleshoot industrial power and control systems
Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with customers and internal teams
Experience developing technical documentation and reports
High attention to detail with strong problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and perform under project deadlines
Comfortable providing technical training and support to small groups
Experience with modern automation platforms or motion control environments
Exposure to mobile automation, robotics, or advanced material handling systems
CAD or electrical schematic familiarity
Commercial awareness and sensitivity to cost, scope, and customer expectations
Associate’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related technical field preferred
Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline is a plus, or equivalent industry experience
