Controls Engineer - Power Generation & Microgrids

UtilityInnovation Group (UIG) is looking for a Controls Engineer - Power Generation and Microgrids to design, develop, automate, implement, and commission UIG products and projects across the U.S. This role will also collaborate closely with UIG's engineering team in the EU to support knowledge sharing and standardization across global projects.

Projects will include distributed generation control systems, PLC programming, SCADA and remote monitoring solutions, battery energy storage applications, networking equipment, and system control architecture. The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to deliver solutions for microgrids, data centers, and utility projects based on customer or internally provided specifications and UIG standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and integrate control systems for UIG products and projects consisting of various microgrid asset types and power system architectures
• Review project specifications and drawings with the design team and identify similar project applications
• Troubleshoot and optimize designs and equipment in both office and field environments
• Produce complete and accurate product and programming designs for internal teams and customers
• Create programming files for various control and communication devices associated with projects
• Collaborate with the engineering team and customers to specify, automate, and commission field devices and systems
• Work with OPC UA protocols and at least two of the following protocols: Modbus, DNP3, IEC61850, Profinet, and MQTT
• Support programming of UIG projects based on designs provided by the larger engineering team
• Summarize data and report on test results
• Ensure schedules and milestone dates are achieved
• Review and verify programs before release to manufacturing
• Provide coordination and documentation support for internal UIG teams
• Resolve outstanding questions or issues related to the automation of UIG projects
• Work from engineering drawings from ePlan and AutoCAD, sketches, verbal descriptions, specifications, and technical documentation
• Modify programs based on verbal instruction, sketches, drawings, and conceptual descriptions
• Perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), as required
• Continuously improve operations, streamline work processes, and reduce turnaround times
• Communicate effectively with engineers, drafters, and manufacturing personnel
• Collaborate across teams and raise early flags when milestones are at risk

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field from an accredited university
• 2-5 years of experience in automation systems and SCADA integration
• Ability to interact effectively with peers and management
• Ability to travel up to 35-40% of the year

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong experience with MES/SCADA, PLCs, and industrial networks
• Strong experience with PLC programming tools and languages (CODESYS, Structured Text, Ladder Logic, etc.)
• Experience with Inductive Automation's Ignition platform, specifically Perspective
• Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profinet/Profibus, CANopen, J1939, EtherCAT, and MQTT
• Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills with a desire for continuous improvement
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to occasionally inspect in-process work, including positioning in low or elevated areas around equipment
• Ability to occasionally assist in moving materials and equipment weighing up to ~40 lbs
• Manual dexterity to operate digital equipment, computers, and machine controllers
• Occasional exposure to electrical testing and industrial processes

Work Environment

Primarily an office environment with regular interaction at UIG manufacturing facilities, UIG R&D facilities, and job sites as needed.
