Job Details

A growing, employee-owned industrial automation and engineered systems company is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support a strategic customer in the mission-critical power infrastructure market.

This position will serve as an embedded technical resource for a leading manufacturer of power distribution and integrated infrastructure solutions used in AI-driven data centers and hyperscale facilities. The product portfolio includes Power Distribution Units ranging from 300 kVA to 2,000 kVA, Remote Power Panels, control panels, and advanced integrated infrastructure modules.

The Controls Engineer will work closely with the account management, engineering, purchasing, and operations teams while providing dedicated on-site support at the customer’s Richmond facility. This role is ideal for an engineer who can combine controls design, customer support, project coordination, and supply chain awareness.

Work Location and Schedule
  • Minimum of 50% on-site at the customer facility in Richmond, VA
  • Additional on-site presence may be required during critical production and project phases
  • Remaining work may be performed remotely or from the company’s regional office
  • Periodic travel to company headquarters for coordination with engineering, purchasing, and operations teams

Key Responsibilities
Controls Engineering and Design
  • Develop and maintain wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and panel layouts using AutoCAD Electrical
  • Support PDU, RPP, control panel, and integrated infrastructure module programs
  • Perform PLC and HMI programming for control panel and power distribution applications
  • Translate customer specifications, design standards, and engineering requirements into an executable scope of supply
  • Develop and maintain bills of materials aligned with customer product configurations and engineering changes
  • Review designs for accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance

Procurement and Supply Chain Support
  • Identify long-lead electrical and controls components early in the project lifecycle
  • Coordinate advance procurement activities to reduce lead-time risk and support production schedules
  • Work with purchasing teams, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to maintain component availability
  • Evaluate equivalent components and substitutions when availability issues arise
  • Identify supply chain risks and recommend practical solutions to maintain project continuity

Customer and Account Support
  • Serve as a technical liaison between the customer and internal engineering, purchasing, and operations teams
  • Support engineering RFQs, estimates, and quotations with accurate technical information
  • Assist with project coordination from award through production and delivery
  • Help resolve technical questions related to customer specifications, BOMs, component selection, and design changes
  • Maintain clear communication regarding project requirements, risks, schedules, and deliverables


Quality, Safety, and Compliance
  • Ensure designs comply with UL 508A, NEC, OSHA, and other applicable standards
  • Support UL listing requirements for control panel and power distribution assemblies
  • Follow established ISO 9001 quality management procedures
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and revision control
  • Support quality reviews and corrective actions when required

Field and Startup Support
  • Support factory acceptance testing, validation, installation, and commissioning activities
  • Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues during integration and startup
  • Provide technical problem resolution for control panels and power distribution systems
  • Work with customer and internal teams to ensure successful project completion

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Experience designing industrial control panels and electrical systems
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical
  • Hands-on PLC and HMI programming experience
  • Experience developing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and bills of materials
  • Knowledge of UL 508A, NEC, and applicable industrial safety standards
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications and customer design requirements
  • Strong communication, organization, and customer-facing skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a project-driven manufacturing environment
  • Willingness to work on-site in Richmond at least 50% of the time

Preferred Experience
  • Experience with Power Distribution Units, Remote Power Panels, switchgear, or mission-critical electrical infrastructure
  • Background supporting data centers, hyperscale facilities, or modular power systems
  • Experience coordinating with purchasing and supply chain teams
  • Familiarity with long-lead electrical components and component substitution strategies
  • Experience supporting FATs, commissioning, and startup activities
  • Background working in an ISO 9001-certified environment
