Position Description The Controls Simulation Engineer will support virtual commissioning activities for microgrid and data center power system controls. They will work with the Power Systems Analysis and Controls/SCADA Engineering teams to build microgrid models in SIMULINK and develop Sequence of Operation (SOO) logic for software-in-the-loop (SIL) simulation. The engineer will create simple (non-dynamic) power system models and sequence control methods in MATLAB/SIMULINK, and use PLC software/hardware to perform co-simulation between plant models and PLC controllers. Efforts will focus on supporting the integration of UIG's Energy Storage for Resiliency (ESR) products, Microgrid control systems, and the GridSure platform. In addition to model development and simulation, the role will involve tuning and testing controls prior to the field commissioning of microgrid systems. The engineer will collaborate closely with internal engineering teams to build models, run simulation studies, and conduct sensitivity analyses, helping transition UIG equipment from concept through design and into production. The Controls Simulation Engineer will report to the Director of Power Systems Analysis and take daily direction from both the Director and the VP of SCADA and Controls. Key Responsibilities Integrate a sequence of operations and protective coordination controls logic in a simulation environment to support PLC controls development and testing for various projects Construct simple power system models in SIMULINK Build and integrate the SOO developed by the engineering team into MATLAB/SIMULINK Build PLC code into SIMULINK to port into PLCs and perform co-simulation, SIL, or hardware-in-the-loop simulation Through modeling and simulation efforts, support the creation of PLC logic for the various control devices associated with various projects Support data center controls development and microgrid controls development Support the programming of the UIG Hardware in the Loop simulation platform using C++, MATLAB/SIMULINK, and industrial communication protocols Provide coordination and documentation for internal UIG teams Resolve any outstanding questions or issues for the SCADA and Controls Team related SOO Communicate orally in the English language with engineers, customers, and partner personnel via phone and face-to-face Serve as a great collaborator, contributor, and initiator Own Controls/SOO Simulation program level support efforts Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field from an Accredited University Experience in MATLAB/SIMULINK Experience with PLC programming and industrial automation Exposure to various industrial communication protocols Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills with a desire for continuous improvement Proficient with Microsoft Office suite Ability to interact with peers and management Ability to travel up to 35% of the year Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficient with MATLAB/SIMULINK Proficient with MATLAB programming language Preferred - Python, C++, Java Preferred - Proficiency with PLC programming tools and languages (IEC 61131), TIA Portal, CODESYS, Structured Text, ladder logic, etc. Preferred - experience with industrial communication protocols Preferred - knowledge of power system operation Occasionally assist with equipment and system testing in the R&D facility and on job sites Manual dexterity to operate digital equipment, including computers and machine controllers for testing, and collecting FAT test data Occasional exposure to and requirement to work around electrical testing and other industrial processes Proficient with MATLAB/SIMULINK Work Environment Primarily in-office with the exception of R&D facility and job site visits Please note: We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.
