THE COLLEGE
Located in the northwest corner of the United States, Peninsula College is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The main campus in Port Angeles, Washington, overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the nearby city of Victoria, British Columbia, and has easy access to the Pacific Ocean, Olympic National Park, and Seattle. Port Angeles is two hours from Seattle and a one-hour ferry ride to Victoria, Canada. The College is honored to serve six sovereign American Indian nations in the region: Jamestown SKlallam, Lower Elwha Klallam, Quileute, Makah, Hoh, and Port Gamble SKlallam.
The College is honored to have strong relationships with these six federally recognized Tribes in the Colleges service district. The College is home to House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse. It is the first Longhouse in the nation to be built on a community College campus. The College offers transferable Indigenous language courses in Klallam/SKlallam, Makah and Quileute and Hoh languages. Instructional programs include a Tribal Homeland Security & Emergency Management certificate and an Integrated Indigenous Studies transfer pathway. The College is committed to doing more and taking future direction from the Tribes.

THE POSITION
The Cook 1 prepares and serves nutritious meals and snacks for children enrolled in the Early Childhood Development Center. Working under general supervision, this position follows approved menus, standardized recipes, USDA and CACFP meal requirements, food-safety standards, childcare licensing requirements, and ECDC procedures. The Cook 1 plans for daily meal service, accommodates documented dietary needs, maintains accurate records, monitors food and supplies, and supports a clean, organized, and welcoming early learning environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Prepare, cook, portion, and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks according to approved menus, standardized recipes, daily counts, and established meal schedules.
Follow USDA and CACFP meal-pattern requirements and ensure all required meal components and age-appropriate portions are provided.
Plan menus with program leadership and adjust meals when items are unavailable while continuing to meet nutrition and meal-pattern requirements.
Prepare substitutions and accommodations for documented allergies, food intolerances, medical needs, and religious or cultural dietary needs while preventing cross-contact.
Transport meals, snacks, and beverages to classrooms at designated service times while maintaining safe temperatures and sanitary handling practices.
Maintain clean and sanitary kitchen, storage, dishwashing, and meal-transport areas in accordance with food-safety standards and childcare licensing requirements.
Receive and inspect deliveries; rotate and organize inventory; monitor stock; calculate supply needs; prepare shopping lists; and order or purchase groceries and supplies as assigned.
Maintain required CACFP records, including menus, meal counts, production records, substitutions, labels, receipts, temperature logs, and monthly reports. Submit documentation within required timelines.
Follow safe procedures for receiving, storing, thawing, preparing, cooking, cooling, reheating, holding, and serving food. Monitor and document food and equipment temperatures as required.
Complete dishwashing, laundry, waste removal, and basic cleaning duties connected to kitchen and meal-service operations.
Communicate promptly with classroom staff and program leadership about menu changes, allergens, meal timing, supply needs, equipment concerns, and other issues affecting service.
Interact with children, families, coworkers, vendors, and visitors in a professional, respectful, and inclusive manner. Model appropriate communication and guidance when working around children.
Provide first aid and respond to emergencies within the scope of required training and ECDC procedures.
Perform related duties consistent with the Cook 1 classification and the operational needs of the ECDC.
Duties of the position require knowledge and experience:
Required physical abilities:
Frequently stand and walk; bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, and use hands repetitively throughout the workday.
Lift and carry food, supplies, pots, pans, and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work safely around heat, steam, cold storage, cleaning products, food allergens, sharp utensils, slippery surfaces, commercial kitchen equipment, and young children.
Required work schedule and work environment:
Position is normally scheduled Monday through Friday; normal hours of operation.
Required education or certificates:
Employees must meet all applicable Washington State requirements for employment in a licensed early learning program, including required background checks, health and safety training, certifications, and other requirements established by applicable laws, regulations, licensing standards, and College policies.
Must be able to obtain a valid Washington State Food Worker Card within the first week of employment and prior to performing independent food preparation or kitchen duties. The card must be maintained and kept current throughout employment.
Individual positions may require additional licenses, certifications, training, or qualifications depending on assigned responsibilities.
BACKGROUND CHECK:
Yes, prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicants suitability and competence to perform in the position.
EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
