Sigma, Inc. is seeking an experienced Cook for an 8-week contract assignment at Lynn Ryan House, 101 Green Street, Lynn, MA. This role is ideal for a dependable and personable cook with experience preparing nutritious meals, buffet-style food service, and maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment.
Schedule: Tuesday–Saturday, approximately 9:00/9:30 AM–6:00/6:30 PM
Hours: Approximately 40 hours/week
Contract: 8 weeks
Start Dates: September 14 or September 28
Location: Lynn, MA – onsite
Local Candidates Only: Preferably within 10 miles of Ryan House
Job Summary
The Cook will prepare and serve healthy, well-balanced meals and snacks while ensuring proper food quality, temperature, nutrition standards, and timely meal service. The position includes buffet-style food preparation and serving, kitchen setup and cleanup, food storage, supply management, and direct interaction with clients.
The ideal candidate will have an easygoing personality, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. De-escalation experience is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and/or follow weekly menus featuring balanced, nutritious meals that meet USDA requirements.
- Prepare appetizing and healthy meals and snacks according to scheduled meal times.
- Prepare and serve food in a buffet-style setting.
- Transport food from Transitions to TTC while maintaining food quality and safety.
- Inspect food for proper quality and quantity before serving.
- Prepare meals for special events and holidays.
- Take appropriate measures to minimize food waste.
- Set up and clean food production and kitchen areas.
- Follow kitchen cleanliness, sanitation, and food safety guidelines established by the local Board of Health.
- Open and close the kitchen and ensure food is properly stored.
- Coordinate ordering and maintenance of supplies with the Program Director.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with food suppliers.
- Participate in regular supervision meetings.
- Provide professional, respectful, and friendly customer service to clients.
- Use effective communication and de-escalation skills when needed.
- Work quickly and efficiently to meet scheduled serving times and program expectations.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant cooking or food preparation experience.
- Experience preparing and serving food in a buffet-style environment.
- ServeSafe certification required prior to start.
- Documented training or experience in nutrition and menu planning in an institutional setting.
- Valid driver's license in good standing preferred.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- De-escalation experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to work Tuesday–Saturday.
- Ability to interact with clients in a sensitive, respectful, and professional manner.
- Comfortable working in a multicultural environment and supporting individuals in a substance abuse treatment setting.
