Job Summary
A Cook performs a variety of tasks that facilitate the provision of food service and nutritional support to patients, employees, and visitors
Reports to: Director of Food and Nutrition Services, Food and Nutrition Services Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Requirements
Minimum Education
High School graduate or equivalent required
Two Years experience in food services hospital setting preferred
Ability to be ServSafe Certified within 3 months of hire. Also, must re-certify every 3 years.
Required Skills
Excellent customer service skills including effective listening skills
Basic math skills are required
Knowledge of food sanitation and safety (HACCP Servsafe Certificate)
Knowledge of food quality through the use of established procedures and guidelines
Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department
Ability to motivate personnel, problem-solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner
Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments
Essential Functions
Prepares, seasons, and cooks food for patients, staff, visitors, and special functions
Reviews menus to determine types and quantities of food needed
Prepares quality food in sufficient quantities to cover all service requirements
Coordinates timing of preparation in order to meet service schedules for patients, staff and visitors
Adheres to standardized recipes and portion control to prevent food waste and control food cost
Provides maintenance and sanitation of equipment in food production areas
Adheres to sanitation and food safety standards (HACCP)
Participates in the process of ordering supplies
Gives direction to personnel assisting in food preparation
Utilizes knowledge of age specific needs of patients in performance of duties and responsibilities
Orients and mentors new staff members
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as necessary
Other duties as assigned
Functional Demands
Ability to work all shifts required, day or night
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
Must be able to push a cart loaded with 50 or more pounds
Must be able to sit long periods of time
Work requires physical ability such as walking, standing and bending
Must be able to talk and listen in order to communicate with patients
