Under the direction of the Associate Director of Student Accessibility Services for the Westchester Campuses, the job responsibilities for this position include the reviewing of disability documentation and assessing the needs of students with disabilities, providing ongoing support to students with disabilities in the maintenance of their disability accommodations, consulting with and providing training to the University on working with students with disabilities, and providing outreach and promoting disability awareness to the external community. These services are vital to the University's goals of increasing student retention and graduation rates. The Coordinator of the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) will work individually with students with disabilities to determine appropriate accommodations and assist in the maintenance of those accommodations during the student's career at Pace. The Coordinator will also assist in the managing of the Office of Disability Services (ODS) budget line, ODS statistics, and will be responsible for researching appropriate assistive technologies and supports.
Position Duties
- Work with the Associate Director of Student Accessibility Services in the coordination of accommodations and general support for students with disabilities.
- Participate in Disability Team meetings to present student cases in order to evaluate documentation.
- Determine appropriate accommodations.
- Conduct disability intake appointments to review protocol and implementation practices. Discuss questions or concerns, gather information about their disability and requests for accommodations; once accommodations are determined, assist in learning how to implement them.
- Provide transitional support services for students with disabilities to assist them in the process of acclimating to a higher education setting and learning to manage their accommodations independently.
- Advocate and provide guidance and support for students with disabilities through individual meetings and/or meetings with University faculty and staff should questions or issues arise.
- Provide assistance in the updating of student accommodations paperwork.
- Provide support and/or training for students in how to utilize our assistive technology as needed.
- Provide assistance to students in locating textbooks in alternative formats.
- Assist the Associate Director of Student Accessibility Services in the management of the SAS budget line and the related vendor contracts and payments for all of the disability accommodation or services related costs.
- Assist in the maintenance of student statistics, records, and provide data to NYS, Federal, and internal audit requests.
- Participate in regional conferences and professional meetings to enhance the disability services provided at the University Outreach.
- Participate in consultation and training to Pace faculty and staff on working with students with disabilities. Interact individually with prospective students and their families to provide information about disability services at Pace University.
- Participate in Admissions events in order to provide information to prospective students and their families disability services at Pace University.
- Participation in projects, programs, outreach efforts, workshops, or crisis response events offered by the Counseling & Personal Development Center and/or requested by other University offices.
- External outreach: Work with the Associate Director of Student Accessibility Services to develop liaison relationships with local school districts and community disabilities support services, Attend college fairs and community outreach events in an effort to attract, recruit, or retain a diverse student population.
- Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Supervision Exercised
The Coordinator will manage a caseload of students with disabilities and their respective accommodations.
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required (Masters Degree preferred) in Disability Studies, Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, Education, or a related field.
- At least one year of experience working in an educational, psychological, medical, or legal setting and experience managing confidential material required.
- Experience in working with students with disabilities in an educational or clinical setting strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills including effective telephone and in person communication and proficiency in written correspondence.
- Must be well-organized and able to manage time efficiently.
- Able to meet deadlines for short and long-term projects while maintaining the flexibility to respond to student issues that arise on a daily basis.
- Must be skilled in use of all Microsoft Office programs.
- Familiarity with neuro-psychological and educational assessments, specifically around the determination of disability accommodations strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of the process of determining reasonable disability accommodations strongly preferred.
- Experience with assistive technology preferred.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (occasional evening or weekend outreach events possible - no more than 3-4/year).
