Classification Title: Coordinator of Driver Education (Part-Time)

Department: Transportation

Pay Grade: Hourly

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Supervisor: Director of Transportation

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The individual in this position is responsible for coordinating and participating in driving instruction for students; does related work as required. The position includes limited supervision over driver education instructors.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Plans and coordinates driver education programs and procedures;
  • Provides vehicle education and driver training to students;
  • Prepares and maintains detailed records and files.
  • Schedules students and instructors for driver education training;
  • Prepares and maintains student files;
  • Secures adequate and appropriate materials and supplies;
  • Prepares and updates curriculum materials and programs;
  • Performs pre-trip inspection of driver training cars, prepares cars for operation;
  • Provides each student with driver training educational materials and range layout;
  • Ensures that all students have proper permits;
  • Provides vehicle service and preventive maintenance procedures and operating instructions;
  • Assigns exercises to students, observes student driving and provides direction and instruction at the range;
  • Evaluates and grades student operation and advises on needed improvements;
  • Schedules, escorts, instructs, trains and evaluates students on open highway driving;
  • Prepares records and reports on student progress, notifies guidance counselors and parents of results;
  • Prepares insurance letters for each student who successfully completes the training;
  • Ensures that vehicles are properly cared for; ensures that driving range is properly secured;
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate records and files;

Additional Duties:

  • Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented driver education training and considerable experience as a driver education instructor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of an appropriate driver''s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate driver training certification from the Virginia Department of Education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of driver training programs, methods and procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and the safe operation of motor vehicles.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and methods of instruction.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle service and preventive maintenance methods and techniques.
  • Ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with school staff and students.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle properly and safely.
  • Ability to think and act quickly and calmly.

Work is performed while standing, prolonged sitting and/or walking. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.   • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.

Work Environment:

The worker is performed on public roadways in potentially high-stress situations.
