Job Description and Duties

The Coordinator of Nursing Services (Nurse Administrator) will be directed by the Assistant Executive Director in Executive Services at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

  • Provides 24-hour direction of the Nersing Service Department through direct management of assigned supervisory administrative personnel, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Assistant Coordinators of Nursing Services (ACNS) and Supervising Registered Nurses (SRNs)
  • Attends unit shift changes, performs patient rounds, visits unit's specific patient and/or staff issues; respond to environmental inspections, and personal escort for regulatory agencies and visitors from outside agencies/the public when touring/surveying the hospitals patient care areas to ensure their safety and the safety of Department of State Hospital (DSH) patients and property.
  • Maintains a reliable basis for nursing staff utilization review and cost controls; monitors and evaluates hospital-wide utilization of registry and overtime to control staffing costs on each Nursing Unit; and reviews staffing report of staffing use patterns and cost data for each nursing unit hospitalwide.
  • Supports and enhances the hospital's planning and policy developments efforts through participation on Executive Committee, Policy Implementation Committee, Quality Council, General Management Meeting and other hospital-wide committees.
  • Participates in the formation and oversight of the hospital's emergency management process and covers the Executive Director office, in their absence
  • Provides oversight to forensic patients medical and psychiatric care needs, assures that Nursing Services shall be organized and that the scope of nursing activities is congruent with nursing care needs of patients and the mission of the Department of State Hospitals - and commensurate with the qualifications of nursing personnel providing care.
  • Responsible for all aspects of patient supervision on a 24-hour basis, particularly during emergencies; and conduct nursing rounds to ensure safety of facility population and DSH property.
  • Applies and demonstrates knowledge of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) and correct methods of Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI), that includes patient containment, heavy lifting, applying restraints, and responding to emergency situations throughout the hospital.
