Job Summary and Qualifications

Position Summary:Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Serves as the hospital representative during legal proceedings as delegated, and provides documents, attends interviews, depositions and court appearances. Participates in loss prevention as related to the hospital Risk Management Plan. Continually strives to improve processes and services.

Job Responsibilities: Demonstrates the ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of population served, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, while providing care/service with respect to cultural differences and spiritual needs.

  • Serves as a resource person for questions or problems of a legal nature; Provides educational and emotional support for employees involved in litigation; Represents the medical center in pre-trial and court proceedings as delegated by the Risk Manager.
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with hospital staff, residents, and physicians regarding quality improvement and risk management; Participates in the education of hospital staff, physicians and resident staff related to patient safety and risk management.
  • Actively participates collaborates in the disclosure proves for unanticipated events, use of apology, alternate dispute resolution mechanisms, early payment strategy, and lesson learned prevention activities.
  • Monitors compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations, JC requirements, and State of Kansas requirements as related to the Risk Management Plan.
  • Assists with collection of data for special physician peer review monitoring or trending as requested by the Clinical Risk Committee, Clinical Chairperson, or Vice President of Medical Affairs.
  • Prepares and coordinates activities of the Clinical Risk Committee, Investigating committees, Fair Hearing process, and special Clinical Services Committee function as related to Clinical Risk.
  • Identifies possible legal issues that may result in litigation through event analysis.
  • Assists department heads in designing a risk management program specific to their department.
  • Provides new employee orientation.
  • Serves as the System Administrator for the online reporting platform VigiLanz.
  • Provides statistical and qualitative reports to various audiences on identified trends.
  • Coordinates patient concern resolution while patients are hospitalized.
  • Collaborative with hospital staff to ensure timely follow-up to hospital grievances.
  • Demonstrates a willingness and ability to assist others; assists with the care of the patient in collaboration with the patient care team.
  • Participates in the improvement of operational functions and of patient care.
  • Establishes communication and respectful relationships with all disciplines.
  • Recognizes when and how to escalate patient concerns up the chain of command.
  • Answers telephone efficiently and courteously, relaying messages and calls to appropriate personnel and other departments as needed.
  • Maintains records, transcribes physician orders, and ensures orders are carried out in an expeditious manner.
  • Proactively takes accountability for identifying customer concerns and resolving them using appropriate channels.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Required Education or Experience : 

  • Bachelor degree in Healthcare related field

Required Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Basic knowledge of the legal system and current risk management practices
  • Demonstrated ability for good written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical methods and educational theory
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laws and regulations affecting the organization
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic research design, data analysis, data aggregation and display 

Preferred Registration, Licensure and/or Certification: 

  • Registered Nurse or other healthcare related credential
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) 

Preferred Education or Experience: 

  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM)

Master degree in Business, Healthcare, or Public Health
