Job Title: Corporal (B shift)

Exemption Status: Nonexempt/At-Will

Reports to: Chief of Police

Pay Grade: H7

Calendar Days: 260

Dept./School: Police Department

Primary Purpose:

Patrols district property to protect all students, personnel, and visitors from physical harm and prevent property loss due to theft or vandalism. Support and promote healthy relationships to ensure a safe learning and teaching environment. Act as a resource to students, staff members, and the community to provide guidance in law enforcement matters. Establish healthy relationships to ensure that first responders at all jurisdictional levels and across all disciplines work together effectively and efficiently. Enforces all laws including municipal ordinances, county ordinances, and state laws.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification Requirements

High school graduate or GED equivalent

Intermediate TCLEOSE Proficiency Certificate preferred

Valid Texas Peace Officer License from the Texas Commission on law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE)

Valid Texas Driver's License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check

Special Knowledge and Skills

Function as a first line supervisory Corporal as assigned. Assume the role of supervisor in the absences of a Sergeant or higher ranking police supervisor

Oversee and direct the daily patrol operations/emergency response

Rotating shift work schedules

Receive and review offense reports and complaint information

Conduct preliminary investigation which includes visiting crime scene, drawing diagrams, taking photographs, gathering evidence and supporting documentation that surrounds alleged case

Locate and interview complaints and witnesses to obtain written statements

Assist in evidence and property system logging and disposition

Collaborate with other Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies associated with related investigation matters

Maintain log of daily and monthly investigation activities

Administer crime prevention programs in schools and other District facilities

Assist the general public in investigation matters and issues within the jurisdiction of Harlandale ISD

Perform other duties as assigned including patrol duties

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience as a Texas Police Officer

  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator's Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Safety

  1. Help provide traffic control at athletic events, school closings or openings, or at any other time.

  2. provide protection to or escort district personnel as needed.

  3. Operate all equipment including firearms according to the established safety procedures.

  4. Use sound judgment and effectively communicate with and elicit information from emotionally distraught students,

staff, parents, and citizens.

  1. Protect the safety and welfare of any person in the jurisdiction of the police officer.

  2. Assist school administration in maintaining a safe and secure environment.

  3. Be an available resource within the educational setting to connect the school community to outside resources.

  4. Establish healthy relationships within the school setting by working as a team with students, parents, and school staff.

  5. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Administration

  1. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and documents required, including affidavits for arrest , incident reports, and activity reports.

  2. Perform other job-related duties as may be assigned by the Chief Of Police or Designee.

Equipment Used:

District vehicles, firearms, handcuffs, alarm systems, fire extinguishers, security equipment

Office equipment - personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.

Mental Demands:

Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute, Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift (10-50 pounds) frequently, and/or carry moderate weight (50-100 pounds) occasionally. More than 100 pounds infrequently.

Maintain emotional control under stress.

Sit, stand, walk, climb stairs or ladder, reach repetitive hand motions, hear, speak, travel infrequently within the District and occasionally outside the district/county, may experience prolonged and irregular work hours, and work with frequent interruptions.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle, if on a drive assignment.

Environmental Factors:

Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration

Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)

Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces

Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
