Corporate Tax Counsel (RELOCATION AVAILABLE)

LOCATION: Chicago, IL Corporate Law Department Satellite Office

HYBRID WORK ARRANGEMENT:  A "Hybrid" position means selected candidates will be required to work in our Chicago, IL Corporate Law Department Satellite Office and will spend some time working both in office and from their home. Work arrangements could change over time based on business need.

The Opportunity

This position is within the Tax, Reinsurance and Financial Counseling unit of the Corporate Law Department, located in our new satellite office in Chicago's West Loop.

The unit advises on insurance-related tax, and general corporate tax issues.  It also focuses on tax and ERISA issues concerning State Farm benefit programs and all financial services products offered by State Farm.  The unit also advises on international tax issues, acquisitions, reinsurance matters, and financial matters in support of State Farm's advanced planning area.

The primary focus of the Counsel position is to advise on federal, international, state and local corporate tax matters. This position entails not only advising on federal, state/local and international tax matters, but also a wide variety of additional responsibilities.

• Provide legal advice related to federal and state audits and other controversy work;
• Advise on tax compliance;
• Provide legal advice on issues involving various company transactions including mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance and federal and state tax credits;
• Provide legal advice to appropriate representatives of the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates;
• Provide legal services on behalf of the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates;
• Analyze legal problems, and interpret laws and regulations;
• Approach legal matters and/or litigation resolution in creative ways; and
• Serve as a resource for the organization on complex issues.

What We Are Looking For

Candidates with 7 or more years of federal and state corporate income tax experience preferably at a medium to large-size law firm, national office of a prominent accounting firm, or in-house corporate legal department.

• An understanding of insurance company taxation is helpful.
• Experience with various company transactions including mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance and tax credits is helpful.
• Law degree from ABA accredited law school and excellent academic credentials.
• Must have active license to practice law in at least one state and a member in good standing of the bar.
• Advanced knowledge of legal principles and practices related to the subject matter of the attorney's area of practice and/or leadership management skills.
• If not already licensed to practice law in Illinois, you will need to obtain at least an in-house limited license for this role, submit an application to the Illinois Board of Admissions within 90 days from your start date, actively pursue the licensure, and keep your supervisor informed throughout the process.
• Proactive mindset, anticipates and responds effectively to client's needs and actively assists clients by practicing preventive law.

Qualified applicants must possess: a commitment to providing quality legal advice, learning agility (including a demonstrated willingness to develop expertise in new subject matters), and a history of enthusiastic participation in a team environment.

Additional Details

• Other than as authorized by the General Counsel or her designee, employees are not permitted to handle any legal business outside of State Farm except authorized pro bono work.
• Newly hired employees must cease all outside practice and all suit involvement before joining State Farm.
• Limited travel may be required via commercial transportation or driving to job related activities and occasional travel to Corporate Headquarters in Bloomington, IL.
• May work irregular hours due to workload and nature of work
• Relocation benefits may be available depending on eligibility and position.

Because work-life balance is a priority at State Farm, compensation is based on our standard 38:45-hour work week!

• Potential starting salary range: $185,000 - $280,000
• • Starting salary will be based on skills, background, and experience
  • High end of the range limited to applicants with significant relevant experience
• Potential yearly incentive pay up to 30% of base salary
