About Wabash Valley Correctional Facility:
Wabash Valley Correctional Facility is a multi‑level security facility located in Carlisle, Indiana, with a capacity of more than 2,200 incarcerated adult males. The facility includes both maximum‑security and minimum‑security housing. Programs support rehabilitation through educational services, treatment, and specialized initiatives. Notable offerings include the Special Needs Acclimation Program (SNAP), which provides tailored support for individuals with unique needs. Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.
A Day in the Life:
The essential elements of the job duties:
- Direct the operation of the powerhouse in determining work priorities, planning maintenance, construction, and repairs to ensure safe and efficient generation and distribution of steam and water systems.
- Supervise water softening and water treatment plants, operation of sewage disposal plants and entire
electrical and/or air conditioning system.
- Implement repairs, renovations, remodeling, or construction to improve powerhouse or for any facility construction jobs.
- Explain to the supervisors and the team changes in policies, programs, or objectives as well as use of new tools and equipment.
- Schedule deadlines and reviews progress and operation of each department.
- Develop training programs for all trades including specialty trades for the powerhouse and water and sewage plants and supervise the implementation of these programs.
- Coordinate and oversee the preventive maintenance program.
- Maintain inventory records, approve requisitions for supplies, equipment and tools and prepare budget recommendations.
- Ensure all safety standards are maintained as per Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
- Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
- Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What Youll Need for Success:
Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:
- Thorough knowledge of safety standards to ensure ecient operation.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in all trades. Thorough knowledge of the methods involved in operation of all utility functions such as water softening and treatment, sewage disposal, air conditioning and electrical distribution.
- Thorough knowledge of facility and state personnel policies, rules, and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to plan, understand and interpret detailed plans, blueprints, and specications.
- Ability to coordinate many separate maintenance, utility, and powerhouse activities into an ecient,
eective operation.
- Ability to supervise, instruct, train, and direct the work of subordinates.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare a variety of reports and budget justications.
- Ability to foresee problems, adjust, provide long or short-range plans and implementing preventive maintenance programs.
- Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workow.
- Ability to eectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and at least 5+ years of experience in operation and maintenance of steam generating plants; steam, water, sewage, and electrical distribution systems and general building maintenance including four (4) years of supervisory experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.
