It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.     Description of Work

    The Correctional Sergeant II position is located at Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

    Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates. Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s). Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

    Salary Range: $39,244.00-$68,679.00

    MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

    About the Division of Institutions:

    The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
