Location: Stafford Creek Corrections Center | Aberdeen, WA

Salary Range: $115,296 Annually

If so, the Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a skilled and motivated Correctional Unit Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of an incarcerated living unit while fostering a culture of safety, consistency, and operational excellence!

We are currently looking to fill this position in an acting (non-permanent) capacity however this recruitment may be used to fill future non-permanent and permanent vacancies that occur.

The Correctional Unit Supervisor is responsible for supervising incarcerated individuals, staff, and the overall day-to-day functions of a living unit in accordance with Washington Administrative Code (WAC), Department of Corrections policies, and facility Operational Memoranda. You will provide direct leadership and guidance to Classification Counselors, support staff, and Correctional Sergeants who oversee Correctional Officers, ensuring clear expectations, professional conduct, and effective team performance. Your leadership will directly influence unit safety, staff development, and the successful management of incarcerated individuals.

The candidate of choice will continuously inspect and evaluate correctional and security procedures to ensure proper application of directives and compliance with established standards. By analyzing operations, identifying challenges, and recommending practical solutions, you will promote efficiency, fiscal responsibility, and continuous improvement. Maintaining sanitation and security requirements will remain a critical priority, ensuring the living unit operates safely and in alignment with agency expectations.

Duties

As a Correctional Unit Supervisor, some of your duties will include:

  • Supervising, monitoring, and directing the operations of an incarcerated individual living unit to include security practices, incarcerated individual program assignments, sanitation of the units, and compliance with DOC custody policies and operational memoranda which could look like:

  • Directing the security and accountability of incarcerated individuals assigned to the unit

  • Ensuring the living unit sanitation level is consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County and Federal guidelines and local facility standards

  • Ensuring all safety standards associated with the living unit are consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County and Federal guidelines and local facility standards

  • Ensuring inspections/searches of incarcerated individual, incarcerated individual property, and living unit

  • Planning, directing and supervising the work of living unit staff, which includes support staff, Counselors, Correctional Officers and Correctional Sergeants which could include:

  • Establishing and prioritizing performance expectations for staff utilizing core correctional practices

  • Conducting timely employee performance evaluations and ensure proper training is provided

  • Assessing staff individually for career development, personal/professional goals, and provide them with training and/or rotational experiences

  • Providing coaching and mentoring to staff and lead by example

  • Monitoring work performance; investigating and taking appropriate corrective or recommend disciplinary action

  • Ensuring all persons supervised by this position read and comply with Department policies, Operational Memoranda and Post Orders/manuals

  • Planning, directing and monitoring unit programs

  • Oversight, conducting and/or participating in hearings, investigations, and meetings

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED

AND

  • Seven years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience and three years experience as a supervisor, where two of the three years being within a correctional setting.

OR

  • Satisfactory completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) from a university or college whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)

AND

  • Five years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience and two years experience as a supervisor, where one of the two years being within a correctional setting.

OR

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)

AND

  • Three years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment, custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience and two years experience as a supervisor, where one of the two years being within a correctional setting.
  • Note: Corrections experience is defined where the focus of the work is interacting directly with incarcerated individuals the majority of the time.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of DOC Policies, RCWs, WACs, and Operational Memoranda
  • Working knowledge of offender management and supervision, including behavior management, classification process, sanitation, security and safety.
  • Understanding of incarcerated programs including preparation of offenders for transition back into society

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

Social Security

All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Holidays

Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.

Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.

Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.

Sick Leave

Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.

Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

Vacation (Annual Leave)

Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in WAC 357-31-165(1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.

Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with WAC 357-31-165(1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.

Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

As provided in WAC 357-58-175, an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.

Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.

Military Leave

Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

Bereavement Leave

Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
