CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: CORRECTIONS UTILITY OFFICER TRANSITIONAL CENTER
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to provide general safety and security of the facility, officers, inmates, and the general public during an assigned shift. Monitors inmate activity within the facility and on work detail. Assists in providing job counseling services to inmates assigned to the Transitional Center (TC). May be responsible for inmate transportation. May be responsible for control room operation and accountability for key issues, log book maintenance, and related security measures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Assists Chief of Security and Security Supervisor in the operation of the Jackson County Correctional Institution's Transitional Center (TC) by making frequent inspections of the Transitional Center Dorm and the inmates that are assigned to that area. • Enforces dorm sanitation and inmate property regulations within the dorm. • Coordinates scheduling for job procurement and programs associated with the Transitional Center. • Assists in performing job counseling functions with TC inmates. • Provides transportation for T/C Residents, as needed, to work sites, and makes site visits as directed by his supervisor. • Completes clerical duties related to the operation of the Transitional Center to include: Scribe data entry; case notes, record keeping, document processing, and other clerical duties as may be required. • Provides assistance with any security matters at the Jackson County Correctional Institute on assigned shift; conducts investigations on potential security matters; conducts routine security inspections of facility throughout shift; conducts isolation and dorms checks; conducts PREA check; takes head counts throughout the shift; acts on emergency situations following established protocol; breaks up fights among inmates; supervises investigation of rule violation on assigned shift. • Monitors inmate activity within the facility and on work detail; observes physical condition of inmates; oversees shakedown of inmates; oversees inmate food service; distributes medication, packages, mail, and other items to inmates; notifies inmates of required attendance at classes or other engagements; may serve on the inmate classification committee; may conduct inmate drug testing; may assist with inmate transfer process; may participate in transportation of inmates. • May maintain control of keys, locks, doors, and other locking devices; maintains a working key board and back-up key system. • Responds to telephone and radio calls. • Completes duty and incident reports. • Operates a personal computer, copier, phone system, and other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent with one to two years related work experience and some knowledge of the daily operations and security matters at a correctional facility; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and have the ability to obtain and maintain POST certification from the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Environmental Factors: Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
