Overview:
  • The primary purpose of the Corrosion Technician is to operate and maintain the cathodic protection (CP) facilities through planning and implementation of corrosion control and pipeline integrity activities for pipelines, terminals, and other facilities including design, installation, operation, and maintenance. The Corrosion Technician must also ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures mandated by Office of Pipeline safety and other state agencies.
Responsibilities:
  • Possess knowledge in internal corrosion control.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the internal corrosion chemical program, including extraction and insertion corrosion coupons.
  • Knowledge on adjustments of chemical injection pumps. Schedule swabs runs and determine the amount of chemical required.
  • Monitoring product downtime and flow velocities
  • Bacterial analysis and compositional water analysis
  • Design, install, operate and maintain rectifiers and ground beds for cathodic protection.
  • Maintain rectifiers which protect pipeline and tanks externally with impressed current.
  • Maintain a sacrificial anode system.
  • Manage contractor crews for corrosion projects; (coating pipelines, tanks and installing various CP systems).
  • Supervise and/or conduct CIS/Depolarization surveys and analyze data. Follow analysis of data with remedial actions needed.
  • Conduct coating/inspections and repairs on pipelines and tanks.
  • Use ultrasonic thickness testing equipment to determine metal integrity on piping and tanks.
  • Locate submerged lines with line finder.
  • Repair printed circuit boards, alarm modules, and rectifier stacks.
  • Installation and maintenance of CP test stations, pipeline signs, and aerial markers.
  • Troubleshoot, identify, and repair buried negatives cables.
  • Supervise contractor crews on new ground bed installations and complete required documentation.
  • Annual/Periodic surveys following NACE/DOT criteria to insure proper CP protection.
  • Proficient in AC corrosion control, mitigation, monitoring and evaluation of data.
  • Assist management in planning future budget needs for CP improvements.
  • Assist with all regulatory inspections.
  • Maintain Operator Qualifications (OQ).            
  • Utilize company systems and applications for tracking and documenting inspections.
  • Complete special projects and annual objectives as assigned.
  • Maintain a regular and dependable attendance, and high level of performance.
  • Maintain a high regard for personal safety, the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.  

Job level commensurate with experience and skill sets.

 

 

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.

Experience, Specific Knowledge, Certification, & Licenses:

  • Minimum 1-3 years; experience in pipeline or related operations
  • AMPP (NACE) CP or Corrosion Technologist Certification
  • Internal corrosion knowledge is an asset
  • Knowledge and hands on experience with PCS/CPDM software application is a requirement
  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Exercise skill in the monitoring, maintenance, and repair of cathodic protection facilities.
  • Plan, organize, and oversee assigned work programs.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and requests.
  • Analyze and evaluate operations; develop and implement corrective action to resolve problems.
  • Use senses of sight, hearing, and smell to aid in the identification of systems and equipment malfunction.
  • Distinguish basic colors.
  • Physically perform the essential job functions.
  • In order to meet the various maintenance and general operational requirements, a mechanical aptitude is necessary.
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working alone and/or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a team environment and consistently maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with co-workers, clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Well-balanced interpersonal skills and demonstrable verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be accountable and take direction from supervisors, keep required work schedules, focus attention on details, and follow work rules.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential. Must be a problem solver with the ability to find resolutions and/or provide recommendations.

Working Conditions:

  • Physical demands- Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds in awkward positions, and 50 pounds from floor to waist.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, climb vertical access ladders and stairwells, and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • May drive a 4-wheeled drive vehicle several hours per day. Must be able to navigate pipeline right-of-way without accidents or equipment damage.
  • Travel to remote areas within a particular region may involve extended periods of driving, both on and off road. Working environment will involve exposure to extreme weather conditions, difficult terrain, traffic hazards, wildlife, snakes, spiders and other crawling and flying insects.
  • Work in remote areas is often performed alone and without direct supervision; judgment is required when consultation with management is not possible. Must schedule and monitor own work, and work of indirect reports.
  • Travel may be required including overnight stays for several days.
  • Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities.
  • Work is performed outside in conditions that may include winter conditions or extreme summer heat and sun, with temperatures ranging from 20F – 120F.
  • Must plan, schedule and monitor your own work.

Position subject to 24-hour call-out.

Certification, licenses, registrations:

  • A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license are required.
  • If the employee is subject to license or certification requirements or training as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies or the Company, now or in the future, compliance is required under this job description.
Must pass and maintain all applicable Operator Qualification requirements.
